What risk does 301 redirect involve?

I'm searching for a dropped domain within my niche with a lot of back links, and I was thinking of 301 redirecting it to my main site. I'm a bit confused about how and why Google would punish me? A lot of companies buy other companies, and sometime they redirect the site, and sometimes the change name etc.

Would be interesting if someone could share something informative about this.

If the old domain is penalized, which may be a difficult thing for you to determine, then the penalty could be passed on to your new domain.

Analyze the link profile. Not that hard to recognize the difference between a good and bad link profile.

Certain penalties seem to carry over via 301s while others don't. As long as they haven't had big incoming link explosions in the past few months, and you're not targeting the same keywords as their incoming anchor texts, you should be fine.

My thoughts are if Google will penalize me for the redirect? As I read on bhw that their sites got slapped by Google for doing this.

You won't get penalized for the 301 in and of itself; there are lots of legitimate reasons to 301 a site and it's not against G guidelines. But as others posters have said, penalties very often carry over and that's what people who've posted about penalized 301s are talking about.

Would a domain from a different niche make any difference? I was thinking if Google made manual analysis of my site. Wouldn't they say why has a page about animals been redirected to a car insurance website?

This was just an example.

yes many companies are doing this but before redirecting domain you will have to keep in mind lots of things like:

- is your current domain penalized or not?
- are you redirecting your current domain to new domain properly or not?
- and many things
