Let's say you aim for a keyword to rank in the top 3. What is your main method? I have a website about tarot and spirituality, but the most volume comes from tarot card meanings (all of the 78 cards), but the issue is all of the top 3 sites are authoritative and I cant outrank them. I am sure that my content is way better than these websites.
Waiting for your opinions.
You know quite a lot about your niche, which is a great starting point!
Since there are a limited number of cards (78), it’s natural for their “meaning” keywords to have high search volume and be dominated by big sites. For example, the keyword “the wheel of fortune meaning” has 2900 monthly searches, which is a highly lucrative keyword that big-authority sites would be going after.
I would consider this a moderately difficult keyword, and the only way to rank for such keywords is:
1. You have an aged site in the niche (at least 2 years old)
2. The first page of SERPs has at least 2 result with poor content that doesn’t satisfy the current search intent.
If these 2 are satisfied, I would proceed with the keyword and try to make the best resource possible, while including some elements from the top 3 positions (because Google considers them highly relevant). Then throw in some quality backlinks to top it off.
But sometimes all the results have decent content, and it’s really difficult to dethrone the competitors (no matter the amount of backlinks).
So the only solution then is to start with lower competition keywords and build up a decent amount of traffic and authority in your niche, and slowly move up the keyword difficulty range.
In summary: There are some keywords that you just can’t rank for AT THE MOMENT, because the sites dominating those SERPs are quite old and established sites. BUT you can work your way up their by gradually increasing your Authority with solid content + backlinks.
PS: I see that you originally posted this in April. How has the progress been so far?
