Strategies differ from each site. In common, you can consider, regular content updates, guest posts, PBN and web2.0.

I work and follow strategies like

1. Forums
2. Blog commenting
3. Reddit
4. Slide sharing
5. Quora

OP I haven't been doing this long at all but what I have fathered so far is to tier your links - create separate domains, if they've got equity even better then create/emulate content use a blackhat software like what gsa have or rankerx, post on sites which are crawled often, then make a higher tier but with these, aim for quality links on 2.0s. Theres a guy on blackhat section here who always posts good lists of links of 2.0s for something called parasite pages. Not tried it yet but it's worth a look. Drip links from low tier to mid tier. Hardest part is to make sure that your lonking is not totally transparent

by the way my strategy is not same as your's asking folks what they do and follow the rest. That's really old school strategy.

Not all links have equal value. The best links that really boost the rank are when traffic flows from other page to your page after clicking the link. A link is meant to be clicked so you can buy links fom the pages that are already ranking top 10 for your keywords.
