I have about 35% audience retention rate, my videos are between 10-12 minutes in length.

Is it too low for good growth?

I think yours is great.. but it depends on what kind of videos you make, and your competition.
I'm 50% (in 4/5 min videos)

35% retention is really good for 10-12 minutes. It's hard to retain viewers the longer your videos are.
You need to check analytics and find reasons why and when people are leaving.

I googled "average youtube retention rate" and it came back as 60-80%. My videos are high quality, I was wondering what I was doing wrong to have so low performance.

Also what is your average CTR? Mine is between 5-10%.

There is no way that the average retention is 60-80%. You can be lucky if you achieve over 50%. Most people don't. However 5-10% is really low. Aim for at least 30%.

It is very good as far as I have seen with my own channels.

where did that article get their data for 60-80%?

what are you considering to be "high quality"?

your retention rate depends on the information the user is getting from the video and how entertaining the video is. don't focus on the length of the video, focus on how the video plays out. it's just like anything else in marketing, you need to keep wetting your audience's beak without giving away the key point so that they have a feeling where they can't wait to get to the end to find out what happens but don't want to miss anything on the way there. think of it like a movie, beginning-middle-end, where the end is the "twist". say at the beginning, "stay til the end to find out blah blah blah," and make the videos a bit shorter.

that is good! always try to do better, but average CTR on youtube is basically the range you are already at.

30% CTR? Bro you must have some PhD in YouTube thumbnails, that's crazy.
it's not crazy at all.

when it comes to thumbnails, it's just like ppc marketing. your thumbnail needs to grab people's attention and match the headline. of course, all of this depends on your niche. some niches simply don't have the interest enough to get any higher than where you're at. feel free to PM me your niche and i can tell you my experience as i've worked in pretty much every vertical.

It's not that crazy to be honest. There are videos where I get about 50% CTR. I'm sure there are others that have even more.
The thing is most people don't take the time to analyze their KPIs. There's so much you should learn from them over time. Also always A/B test to see what's working and what isn't.
Obviously you can't expect your CTR to change if you always upload thumbnails in the same style.
