What is White hat SEO? [Confused]

when you build backlinks for the purpose of getting ranks, thats not white hat...

In simplest of terms a white hat site wouldn't take SEO into account at all. The idea behind it is that you create a site that is attractive for some reason that people actually look for the site itself and not just a random search result on Google.

Lets take XKCD as an example. It is popular because other people spread the comics around and link to it, the owner probably doesn't do any SEO himself, he focuses on creating something, because the something he is creating is actually good he gets visitors.

Whitehat SEO is basically not doing SEO at all, it means that you do your best to create a good product, service, content or whatever but you don't do any SEO for it beyond basic on-page factors.

most convincing reply :)

In theory, completely natural SEO, e.g. the NYT writes an article about your business and links to your site.

In practice, maybe a little more than that... Anything that is 'approved' by Google.

Nowadays Google has its own opini0on about everthing and white or blackhat...really can't recommend which to apply.

white hat is whatever big G says is white hat, black hat is whatever big G says is black hat.
if u ask me, from the moment you get involved with SEO, there is no chance you maintain white hat purposes and get the wished result, unless u want to stay sooooo down in serp

Using just White Hat SEO techniques to rank your website, will take lot of time.... and there is no guarantee....

You can use some of grey hat techniques if not black hat seo...

I have always thought White hat SEO are about creating quality contents all over the place and be patient.

It seems like the white hat I've come to know is actually grey hat!! And free traffic is a myth!

I have read this thread with interest.

To me white hat on page SEO is real and definable. In the on-page world, by far the most important part of SEO there is, is cut and dried. There are rules, and following them is almost as easy as filling in the blanks.

Most webpages I see do not target what the owner thinks they do, and they try to force themselves to rank for a term the page does not target with back links. The end result is that your back links are unrelated (as far as a computer algorithm is concerned)

How useful are unrelated backlinks? If you fix your onpage seo, all thiose backlinks will suddenly be related to the page content. Couldn't hurt.

When your onpage is even a little off, the search engines will think the page is about something it is not. It may be closely related, but your visitor is not going to find exactly what they searched for. It's that simple. If you do it right, they arrive and find exactly what they wanted.

People think they get an article, fill out the plugin, and they have an optimized page. They don't craft their content. They don't create quality. Hell they don't even use H tags.

Off page is more of a relative thing. Relative to how most people behave in that niche. If you behave like a typical business in that niche, Google will almost never bother you.

I also think that some niches are just black by nature, because the normal way a site behaves in that niche is already blackhat. MY method would never work for the "make money online", "lose weight", or any of the big niches because people have been black-hatting it for so long that it is normal behavior in that niche.

But generally, you are allowed, expected, and encouraged to promote your business. The Internet cannot exist without links.

You are not allowed to try and influence the SERPS.

Walking that line is the craft of whitehat SEO.

I am glad to read the views of all my friends, but I must say white hat SEO needs you to be lucky and it does not happen with online brands though blogs may be!

mashable and techcrunch are a good source to be a white hat seo example - what say?

whats the difference with using automatic software or manual building?
these are the same.. you still building backlinks..

how i see it there are 3 main catagories and most people fall into number 3
1) white-hat - this is considered legitimate website building, organic linking, building a profile, I dont think it has to take a long time, but it involves not paying for anything that is going to benefit your site very much ( as Cutts has pointed out a sponsored link should be nofollow
2) balck hat - this can go from very blackhat (cloaking/hacking) to not so blackhat which I would consider possibly buying SAPE links, sponsored links on pages. Even making 2.0s to boost your site.
3)Grey Hat - a mix of both - with minimal blackhat, i.e. just the buying links part as oppose to cloaking/hacking
