Done zero black hat. Takes time but it's worth it I think. All depends on the goals I guess..

White Hat Link building is just doing that Google recommends. Right from writing good Content and doing guest posts and HARO approach. If you have high-quality content, links will come organically without many efforts. If you check the forum well, you will get many resources.
On the other hand, black hat strategies are those that you use at your won risk. They can go either way, good or bad.

I think whitehat is virtually impossible nowadays unless you're a big, established site. If you are new, you need backlinks to become the kind of site people want to link for which is a catch-22.
Everyone knows the value of backlinks, so there is always some exchange of value going on. If you are a new site, nobody will link to you without some greasing of the wheel (even if it's you taking the journalist out for a nice meal), which is greyhat at best but certainly more blackhat than whitehat.

Methods of whitehat.
Manually- Haro , Guest Post, have damn good info graphic for other to use, or potentially connect someone doing lost post article (no writing required,thus not a "guest post).
Passive - If you write good content people will link to it naturally. Or make some damn good infographics that people might copy/link to without asking (always put your brand on your photos for this reason).

This is pretty much it. After you have good content , you can contact the potential sites and let them know you have valuable content. I tried to contact 30 sites and 2-3 of them were nice enough to add my link on their post.

White hat is genuine way of driving traffic to your site by making backlinks to other High traffic sites. Where as BH is paying for blogs to add your link manually.
