I think its a positive force to be reckoned with. Everyone seems to want to be apart of something or be liked by somebody.

Or NOT!

My advertisers seem to love it, since pages have a like/tweet button where you can see how (apparently) popular a site is, i have it increasingly easier to sell advertising space. A few years ago i would have to produce to a potential advertiser, stats, demographics etc..., nowadays they come by themselves seeing thousands of likes or hundreds of tweets and many times no longer even ask for other stats. So for me the power of like is very powerfull, especially as traditional media hasnt completely understood that for a few bucks you can get lots of likes

Its free advertising if its done by real users. If someone likes your facebook page it will be posted on their wall and all their friends will see it. Facebook these days is like crack. A good idea can spread like wildfire.

For spreading the stuff posted by your it important to be liked by am many users as possible, this simply means they are sharing it with the people connected to them which may not be connected to you.

it's facebook's intricate attempt to monetize a human emotion, because ideally you'd only refer someone to something you Like.

having a medium to convey your desire or preference via a site that (at it it's essence) harvests public data for the purpose of marketing is really appealing to marketing companies... it's still being tinkered with but marketing companies worldwide find approach extremely lucrative which is why FB's been over-valued & big banks privately invested billions into the company.
