As the title says, just wanted some opinions on what is the best platform for ecommerce?

I am talking about a medium sized store (roughly 5k products). I want speed, security and functionality.

I know Magento is well known for running big ecommerce sites, I know its very functional and can connect with a lot of other platforms BUT its also complicated and its got a lot of running costs in my experience.

Shopify I have heard good things but I don't really like platforms where you have so many restrictions - because of course its a managed platform. Also with Spotify you have to pay out a percentage of sales which isnt good.

Wordpress I love and I have some good experiences with woo commerce plugin, but I don't know enough to know whether its as scalable as Magento.

Just wanted some opinions on what is best.

I take your point, ebay is good, and so is Amazon, but I would say they can be used in conjunction to an ecommerce website. I wouldn't want to sell on ebay and nowhere else for example, I think you would be missing out on a lot of sales in that way. And I think it looks more prefessional having your own, fully branded, online store.

I know some companies that have magento set up and then integration with ebay and amazon so products are syncronised across all 3.
 
I would also say Shopify.
The design is more than great, and you have much more time to focus on marketing.

Shopify is a level up. Use it.
 
Woocommerce, I've used it and it works well. But you will need to know a little bit about Wordpress to use it properly. Yes, it can handle 5k products and even more than that.
Avoid shared hosting, and go for a VPS at least (4cores at least), if you want a half decent response time. Add to it a CDN for a better performance too, cloudflare should be enough.

I think Shopify would be a good option. If it can Handel 200,000+ orders, the security and maintenance at any moment for Kyle Cosmetics and stay up then they are good enough for me. Kyle cosmetics is one of if not the largest privately held eComm brands in the world and any time she makes an IG post hundreds of thousands of people visit in an instant so it can handle everything you throw at it pretty much.
 
i think its related on skills and budget, ...
Shopify will be a good option if you have a good starting budget, with less skills,
Woocommerce will be a good option too, if you have good skills with limited budget

Hmm, yes it doesnt surprise me that shopify would be good at handling that sort of load.

The other complicating factor is that, in this case, the site is already on magento, so I wonder what it would be like migrating an existing store to shopify.

Also does anyone know what shopify is like in terms of SEO - is it well build for the search engines, is it well optimized and is it flexible in terms of how much the code can be modified to suit these needs?
 
All of them are great

Magento is pretty advanced and for mega e-commerce websites.

Shopify and woo-commerce are both good. Use w/e u r more exprienced on

You have made a good point here with asking these questions. What I see from your questions is that Shopify is easy and other options are more customize-able but you have to have more skills. I'm not sure as to how easy it is to migrate a shop from Magento. I may be having to do something similar myself soon. Shopify sites I have and have worked on personally seem to do very well with regards to SEO but I have no experience with other sites to give a comparison.

Makes sense what you are saying.

I haven’t sat down to calculate fees either, but I wonder how it compares using Shopify in terms of the commissions they take from sales.
 
Shopify has gotten better on the SEO front. I used to think WooCommerce was better for SEO, and Shopify if you do FB ads or other paid traffic - Now I would say it's pretty much equal when it comes to SEO. You can customize your site quite a lot code-wise in Shopify, specially with premium themes.

Oh, and stay away from Stripe payment gateway. I'd rather grind my nutsack in glass for 7 hours then use Stripe again.

Thanks. You had a bad experience with stripe? I quite like them but only used once.

I’m surprised, I thought everyone would say one of the other platforms but it seems Shopify is most popular.

Have a look at Volusion and even Big Commerce as another couple of options.

Used Volusion in the past, they can take paypal, World Pay ( possibly Stripe too ) as payment processors plus it's a solid platform.
 
My opinion might not be a popular one but I think magento is legit for real big ecommerce, it expensive to develop on but they are legit.
