check out the leaked google manual and you will have a very clear idea what Panda is after: Sites whose only purpose is to make money.
NONE of my clients sites that I have done SEO for (aggressive link-building) have been penalized. Why? Because they have no affiliate links and no ads.
So it's simple:
This latest update is targeting affiliate sites and Adsense sites. The question is, what is the algorithm for punishing the sites? I'm guessing this is how the algorithm is:
For x number of ads you need x number of unique content. (Not total on website, but for each page).
Else
-10 or -20 or -30 or -40 or -50 penalty
unless Pagerank <5 (high trust rank)
So if your pagerank and trustrank is high, the algorithm is different and won't apply to you as much. This explains why some authoritative sites with high pagerank haven't been penalized. Why almost all pr 1-4 sites with affiliate links and ads have been penalized.
Solution? Easy:
Remove the affiliate links and ads and add more unique content, and you will get your ranking back.
Just try it, I guarantee that it will work.

Which is why all the niches I am building from now on will be something I am interested in. Even once my traffic comes back, I will no longer be building product niche sites. I will focus on niches where I have some expertise and so I can actually engage social traffic and interact with my readers.
I'm starting to think that it looks kind of bad having a blog with hundreds of pages with very few people leaving meaningful comments. Kinda tells google that you don't care about your readers and you just want them to click your links.
I know when I am out looking for other blogs to manually comment on, I am always annoyed when I put in so much time to write a brilliant comment (on a site that is active and receives a new unique post everyday) and see nothing show up in the next few days. I then realize that the blog has no comments on it at all and its just spitting out posts to gather traffic and clicks. Perhaps these are the sites being targeted by google.

I don't think comments matter. What if comments is closed? Do you think sites with closed comments will have lower or higher ranking just because of that? Comments are not necessarily good content that the user is searching for. Usually it's spam with scrapebox...so sometimes closed comments are even better...

What I mean is google is looking for more social interaction on certain types of sites. They would expect a blog to have comments unless the blog was set up to be a static site. In that case I guess closed comment would work.
I've just started reading the manual review guidelines google has for their manual reviewers and I must say it is very interesting.
Every keyword will expect different types of result pages. Certain queries will expect some type of interaction. I guess it also depends on the niche.
It seems people in the medical niche is gonna feel it hard from panda as medical queries now require the writer to actually have the proper credentials to be giving out medical advice.

This was my initial guess as I removed amazon links from 1 of my sites and it completely returned.
I then proceeded to remove all my affiliate links from another site and there was no change at all.
The site which I removed all links from dropped back down again so it was just a coincidence that it moved up when I did that, you can probably find my test on another post in the forums here where I thought the cause was affiliate links.
I am convinced right now though that it has nothing to do with affiliate links as I have 30 sites all built very similar linking to amazon and with adsense links. The higher quality ones (medium sized ones) were all penalized but all the low quality sites which I was about to abandon anyways rose up to the top positions in google. The only difference between the sites that went up and the one that dropped is, the ones which received 1 post every 4 days dropped, and the ones which received 1 post every month went up to top spots. This supports the theory that google is bringing bad sites to the top to do some data mining.
Everything considered, I am not that worried about this update anymore and I know soon my sites will all be back on page 1. I saw it happen yesterday for an hour (probably a part of their test).

Same here. One of my main sites is not moving on any keyword even though I've been hitting it with lots of quality backlinks. Nothing.
Agree, seeing the same thing here. I am making adjustments and will report back. Thankfully I diversified sites and not all have the same look/feel. I also sent you a PM with some thoughts.

Interesting, my site in the med niche got hit the hardest out of all mine. The emd only dropped from 3 to 4 but I had several inner pages ranking that dropped to 75 to infinity. Maybe I need to add md to my author name.

I checked , and nothing is changed. The same ads as 5 months ago also.
But no cliks.
btw i use ctr theme, and more people with ctr theme have this problem
Good idea. My traffic is up and down as well. Time to get a beer, set up a few backing strategies on autopilot and get round to all those things I have been missing out on in real life. I'm pretty sure things will recover somewhat...
Exact Match Domain. So if I had a site promoting red toasters it would be http://www.redtoaster.com or something similar.
BTW, I have LOTS of emd's that are affected by this update so I think the only people who think they are benefitting are those who don't own any!
That's what I see with many of my microniche Adsense sites. The ones that I had recently added new content and building links dropped, while sites with 1 page of content and no backlink activity for months rose up a few spots or stayed the same. Hoping my main money makers return back to their old positions.
