What exactly is Alexa rank ? what is its importance in SEO ? How is it different from Google page rank ?

Alexa iis a measure of all traffic including bots and visits where as Google does not include bots and visits by real people the lower you are on alexa the better from all my time with alexa you could class alexa as real and duped same as google i suppose but get in the top 100,000 in alexa and your doing well

Alexa rank actually won't get you anywhere. There are some websites that have 3000K alexa rank and make a killing

The Alexa rank is a ranking system calculated using the Alexa toolbar. Alexa takes the browsing data from the millions of people using this toolbar and calculates the traffic ranking of each site based on reach and page views. Low traffic sites are harder to gauge accurately, but once a site reaches a 100,000 or less ranking the accuracy of the measure increases. Hence the lower your Alexa rank, the credibility of that ranking is increased. Whether you value your Alexa traffic ranking or not, there are definite advantages to having a high Alexa rank. The Alexa ranking is viewed as a reasonable representation of a site?s traffic and authority.

how about this i have a website that started with an alexa ranking of 28bazzillion it was doing no good, now it is down to 1bazzillion but is still doing no good - but ranking on page 1 of google - give me a break!!!

+1

Additional thoughts though: Because the Alexa rank is based on the toolbar, certain websites have a distinct advantage over others. For example, several years back, Tech Crunch had an Alexa rank better than Plenty of Fish even though POF had more than 10x the traffic. That is because the avg visitor to tech crunch was more likely to have the Alexa toolbar installed than the avg visitor to POF.

One of my blogs was ranked in the 90,000 range generating between 60-100 visitors per day because the traffic was very highly targeted toward people who had the alexa toolbar (plus my own visits which also inflated the number). Since then, the site has started generating 100-150 visitors per month and fallen down into the 500,000 range. Nearly 50% more traffic the ranking has dropped because the visitors were totally different.

Alexa is helpful for comparing websites with a similar target audience, but it is important to compare apples to apples if you are going to bother using it.

Its nothing but a Ranking system like Google / bing.
But their main criteria is the amount of visitors that you get in your website.
the less number of alexa the better.
