A profitable niche is one where the return is greater than the expense (including your labor costs) to get that return.

Any niche that you are ROI (return on investment) positive is a good niche.
Example: Sell product for $1000 (cost $1) ROI $999
Example2: Sell product for $10 (cost $1) ROI $9
In both cases you are ROI positive - earn.

Price doesn't matter, it's all about the market, trends, demand, marketing skill and a bunch of other variables

We can't define a good niche.
If it is profitable for you then it's good
and as others said
Researching Market trend and demand is a plus for starting a niche.
There are many journey threads here. Read it when you have time. You can learn a lot from them.
For amazon niche use tools like jungle scout
You can get a data based on product popularity and revenue
plan according to the Datas

At one time Amazon affiliates did best when the product was an impulse purchase... something under 100.00.
That has changed significantly and now you can do well with 900.00 products (I know a guy doing that), 3,000.00 products (I know a guy there too) as well as the lower priced products.
You'll need to do some KW research to find what works best for you.

You can also check for what is most in demand within Amazon itself... lots of great tools available for a monthly fee but I have found it to be worth the money. Jungle Scout was mentioned, I'd also recommend Unicorn Smasher and Market Intelligence by Viral Launch

A good Niche? My take on it would be "Any area were there is still a chance of making money and big players are less.

All niches are profitable you just need to know how to sell. A good salesman can make huge money in any niche.
