So currently I don't IM but I've been thinking about starting up again so I can chat to people. What type of instant messenger do you use and why? I want to just install one thing and be able to chat with the broadest range of people possible... So what's everyone using these days?

Stay away from Trillian. More holes than Paris Hilton (and bigger, too, if you can believe that).
 
The trouble wiht an IM client is it, by nature, is doing a whole lot if port listening. In other words, it's a big ol' target on your computer. So you better be very confident in its security. That's why I only use the IM clients from the vendors direct eg MSN Msgr.
 
Yep that's one of the reasons I stay away from IMing, although the fact that it's a huge time sink is the main one. Too easy to slack off all day. :)

I'm surprised by the number of AIM / ICQ votes so far, I was expecting it to be all about Skype...
 
I use skype because you have the flexibility of voice chat, typing chat
and the opportunity to share screens.

For my business it is a real help... if I didn't need an IM for business
I sure wouldn't have one.
 
ICQ for German friends, MSN for Albanian family&friends + Internet Marketing partners, Yahoo only IM, and last but not least AIM for my affiliate managers :P

Miranda with a few, very good plugins ;) Crypted, good histroy, nice design, anti-spambot for ICQ, etc.

I prefer Skype. It's super easy and very convenient. MSN is okay,too. I don't have much experience with AIM, though.
 
I have used MSN for years for my personal IM and I use Skype for business as it has more functions and you can use the share screen option to walk people through things as you do them.
 
I use Skype. Its the best and easiest way in my opinion
 
Pidgin of course as it supports all of the protocols and it is cross-platform application. I use it time after time with AIM and G-mail protocols. IM sort of a must tool nowadays as it is way faster then email and helps to keep live conversations. It can be also good time waster machine if used improperly. About Skype, it is a great thing for voice conversations but Skype IM protocol kinda sucks as on some slow networks (like wifi AP)it is unable to deliver messages sometimes for dozens of minutes. Same about MSN, protocol sucks big time, not even works on some remote networks. AIM keeps malfunctioning weekly but if you don't use MSN or Yahoo and you work with US companies it is a must. G would be the winner but it still rarely used by others, besides I have privacy concerns with it, but this is I guess current situation with any other IM as well.
