In my experience, updating old content usually works well if the topic is still relevant and you actually improve it, not just change the date. Adding fresh info, better structure and fixing intent mis-matches has helped rankings recover or grow. Blind updates without real value, though, rarely move the needle.

If you add intent fixes like tightening the intro, matching what people actually want now, adding missing sections, and refreshing examples or screenshots/images it might be work

Updating old content is only a gamble if you are doing it blindly. I have found that the best ROI comes from looking at GSC to see which keywords the page is almost ranking for positions 8 to 15, and then adding specific sections to cover those sub topics. It’s not about word count; it’s about filling the information gap that appeared since the post was first published.

Content updates are low hanging opportunities. A targeted refresh of user intent and internal linking can restore rankings more efficiently than creating new pages.

I will not share my personal experience but i will guide you that Search engine prefer fresh information, update content ,fixing outdating facts and expanding useful content can help you ranking .Many websites see better ranking by refreshing the old content rather than publish new article. It is user experience to get new information.
