What happens when call centers start using Google Assistant

Call center operations are not that easy to be caught up by AI programs just yet.

Not true. Call centers use AI extensively for operations/organization, just not for the actual speech.

Well, that's what I meant by my statement. Any call center employee worth his salt will agree with me since I've worked for nearly 3 years in Call centers. I wouldn't go far by saying I know everything about it. But having said that, I'm pretty sure AI is not going to catch up so soon. Be it Sales or Customer Service, this job requires deep "Human" skills which AI programs are not capable of yet. Right now the AI is restricted to filtering calls and its flow to make sure a particular "call type" lands to the specific department. That's the extent of it. Nothing more!

This article shows other applications of AI currently, such as analyzing a call for effectiveness, managing human resources, etc: https://www.computerweekly.com/opin...he-role-of-call-centres-and-call-centre-staff
Seems you are getting way out of the topic now. It was about AI replacing call centers.
Its applications, its effectiveness and how many call centers actually "implement" and use it is a debatable topic. Specially when the source of your article is merely an opinion from just another news journal. (You should know the author herself does all the woodwork, there isn't an AI that helps her do it :P)
Also the point I emphasized is getting customer service from a human and an AI program differs. Imagine yourself at the other end of the call distressed because some shit isnt working as its supposed to. You have done all the manual troubleshooting in the book, yet it doesn't seem to work. Who would you like to speak? An AI which would guide you by the book step by step from scratch or an actual human who would listen and understand what you have been through and then solve the problem. I'd always choose the latter, always!
And then, how about sales? Would you ever in your life buy some shit on a phone call which is sold by an AI program?
Perhaps you don't know the full gravity of the real development on AI which is available for call center use.
The gap between Human interpretation, emotional empathy and collective work experience handling other humans is far more compared to an AI program. That gap is almost as big as a grand canyon!
SO, AI replacing call centers now, Not by a long shot mate..
perhaps till 2022 maybe if there is a major breakthrough or something.

More G Dominance over the net, that scares me.

I think it is innovation at its peak. Google Assistant will outsource the people's job. They can increase the productivity level of the call centres. But nothing is better than talking to an actual person. What do you guys think about it?

The next thing we know everyone will use that, and it'll be just a bunch of AI talking to one another and they'll be making secret deals behind our backs

I'm sick of the automated calls I get all the time, but at least I know its a bot and I can hang up without feeling bad about it. With this you can hardly tell the difference!

It seems like call center people have such a narrow choice of options in terms of trying to help people. I could see how it would be easy to make these type of jobs obsolete.

When i contact a call centre, i want a real human to respond to my inquiries. I am in favour of using technology in companies but you can't just discard the human figure. This issue must be addressed immediately before the corporations start implementing the technology.

Technology that has human touch :)

Yeah when you get those calls all the time and you have to hang up on humans on a regular basis you'll not feel bad for it ;)

The issue here is them taking over and also making secret deals. These things will happen and it is inevitable no matter what we do and how hard we try. I saw this video sometime back it fking made my mind go Bonkers for some time. I was shit scared as to what we might be heading towards but this step towards our own destruction is unavoidable. We will head towards that street and end up slaves to them.

Does it matter if a computer solves your problem faster and you never realize it's a computer?

They are not going to use AI soon imo. I think they are far from perfect. Though, I see a lot of potential in google assistant's new features. Then the next big thing is voice(as Gary Vaynerchuk says)

holy shit.. but I believe that when one jobs dies out, another comes up..

When you're the only call center that uses real live human beings that will be quite the USP.
But if you're the owner of a call center think of all the money you'll save by using all bots, you won't have to pay them wages, or give them breaks or overtime, or benefits. The robo-centric future is great for those who are rich enough to own the bots. So get rich now!
