Was it a fad that died out? I don't see a whole lot of talk about it anymore, what is the new link strategy? Angela's and Paul's links?

I mean, I have seen it still give some decent results depending on the keyword, but it seems as though people have stopped doing it as much.

What is your take?

It is still popular but it has been revolutionized.

Now you get to hear terms like "Link Pyramid" and such.

There is a frantic "landgrab" on at the moment as people try to claim the next big term.

In my view, there will only ever be "networks".

You have to think about what link structure will get past Google's filters as you perceive them, and then you have to implement the plan. THis is what I'm doing right now.

One thing is for sure though - if you make 6 web 2.0 blogs and link them all to each other and then to the money site, it's going to get you nowhere.

Link wheels still work, but you don't want to close the link wheel. You'll need to backlink all of the six web 2.0 sites in the wheel too.

You should also use a proxy to hide your IP so that each one of your backlinks from the web 2.0 sites is coming from different IPs.

?

Hide what IP, when?
When you making your link wheel? (nope that won't matter)
When your backlinking to the linkwheel. Well, if you use a BH tool you may want to , but that's not what you're on about is it?

All your backlinks from WEB2.0 properties WILL be coming from different IP's. Squidoo are not on the same IP as Wordpress.com now are they?

Nope, no idea what this post means.

Sorry chap, don't mean to razz you. Proxies are a good tool in your BH backlinking armory, but really in this case it's when you plug them into some BH multiple linking tool, either to hide your own IP (so your ISP or Google or whoever doesn't get the hump) or to create and post from many different accounts pretending to be several people.

Every standalone WEB2.0 property is already on a seperate server, and they don't share information between them. You can quite happily go from one to the other and create different profiles.

The only time this just MIGHT be an issue is if you are trying to create a linkwheel with more than one link in the same WEB2.0 site.

But seriously, there are so many decent ones out there, you'd be daft to use the same one twice. Not much value in a second link from the same site to the same URL

Scritty

It went the way of the dinosaur as google saw the process as unnatural. Build your backlinking system in a way that is natural... mixing in various types of backlinks and do it in a chaotic random manner.

Well its definetly not as effective as before to be honest... For example you could try building a mini-net. Its a much more efficient linking structure and there are like 4-5 people in the Services section selling that so you should look around ;)

I also like to link like a niave web site owner too. What I mean is if I am trying to rank for the keyword "widget", I like to link on words not related to the keyword.

I believe that is important for making your site look like it's been gaining organic links and not manufactured links.

Google did figure out about link wheels, but if you have ever purchased a link wheel, most of them are built with a bots and have poorly written articles. I think the method will still work as long as the content is original and updated ever so often.

It's just like any other SEO fad. Once the masses start doing it and Google catches on the links are either ignored or devalued. I think they still work but don't carry the juice they once did.

So are you better off building backlinks to your backlinks, or taking that same time and building more back links to your money site?
