What does this mean?

I've just installed Wordfence on my wordpress site and I am following "the tour" - this came up...

When it says that it "Keeps you off Google's SEO black-list" what does that mean?

After reading some threads on backlinking, I'm assuming it has something to do with that - I'm also assuming that if I were to spam websites with my link, it would still be blacklisted by google?

When your website is infected with malware etc.. google can blacklist it, so they say with their protection it won't happen. I guess

Nothing to do with backlinks IMHO

Your website is blacklisted because Google scanned your site and found harmful behavior. Google needs to protect its users from dangerous websites that show up in their search results. In fact, websites that repeatedly get blacklisted for malicious behavior are limited to only one review every 30 days.

^^ exactly. Nothing to do with backlinks, or seo really. Just the fact that if your site has malware on it, google is going to flag it up and possibly remove it from the results.

I think they probably worded it in that particular way to attract customers from the seo community.

Basically, it's an anti-virus for my website. Will it protect against an xss vulnerability?

@davids355 can answer that specific question I am sure but I can tell you I use it on all my WP sites.

It is a real nice free plugin (there is a paid version but I don't have a need for that).

Best things about it -

1. It blocks malicious bots
2. It scans your files for changes
3. It blocks failed logins
4. It protects against vulnerabilities

Not sure about xss specifically. But I know they have some cloud threat system so they patch new vulnerabilities as they become known.

Edit: yes they do protect against xss, as per -

I think you get more features with premium and that cloud threat detection is probably one of them.

I have had sites hacked even with wf installed, but it’s far less likely with it than without it.

the plugin tries to protect you from that ....... his page has no problems.
