And the answer is:
Basically, it notifies certain services that you have updated your content. This can vary from blog networks to certain bots. In a nutshell, it can speed up your new page being indexed a bit, nad it can also drive traffic to your site.
Its basically the equivalent to standing on a hilltop and screaming out to everyone that you have updated your blog.

The weird thing is that in that link to the DP forum I did not see anyone flaming the OP for asking that question. I only saw people trying to be helpful and although the responses were vague and did not go into much detail at least they were trying to help.
Hell, I ain't saw much of a better response here. I myself am curious as to what actually happens when you ping your site.
So basically you ping your site and somebody lets google know that your site has been pung. Is it pung or pinged?
Who knows but I think this is a valid question on an internet marketing forum because I would rather ask the question, get responses, and then be able to redirect questions to the most knowledgeable members for more insight.
Better than a thread asking how to make $100 a day.
