That's why you go to court to force the ISP into handing the details over. You get the costs back from the offending person. The court will force them into handing the details over.

UPDATE:

I have now created a download protection system for all ebooks and software that I have been using with several of my own products and has cut down on naughty free downloads by 90%. The few who have tried to steal my software have paid up when I contacted them using this system. Word must have got round that they can't steal my shit.

Came from the idea that inspired this thread, and works as follows:

1. You send me a copy of your latest ebook or software offering. Software should be an .exe file and not have an installer. Ebooks can be PDF or Word format.

2. I build you an installer package (fully encrypted) that comes with as many random serial numbers and usernames as you need, or just one which I change daily. Upon attempted installation the serial number and username typed are authenticated against a list hosted by yourself, or by myself should you prefer. If the serial and username does not match one on the list, installation will stop.

3. At this stage (whether authentication fails or passes) the installer will automatically send the following list of information about the person trying to install the package and about their computer to an email address of your choice:

Product Name.
Customer Email. (must be genuine)
Username. (or what they typed).
Serial (or what they typed).
PC User Name.
PC Domain name.
NIC/MAC Address.
IP Address.
Language used on PC.
PC display (width,height).
Available RAM on PC.
Operating System being used.
Operating System Version (ie. 2.8)
Operating System Service Pack.
Organization (if being used on a network).
Hard Drive Serial Number.
Hard Drive Size (total).
Installation folder.
Free space left on hard drive.
Registration time and date.

There will be more to add to this list shortly, but at the moment this is enough to go after someone who tries to steal your offering. You even know where they installed it. I have gone after several naughty scoundrels who have tried to download and install my software for free. The bounders.

When you send them the list above they realise they are stuffed and ALWAYS pay up. I've made an extra 40% in the past few days just by chasing illegal downloads.

I will be offering this as a service very shortly. I am currently making a video which will be going on YouTube showing this in action, and showing people who have paid up after I emailed them. All this will be sent in a guide as well with the service. Anyone interested in this PM me.

if they are download your application and not really downloading the copyrighted application they havent committed a crime.
im referring to your original post not your content protection post.3

also downloading something that requires a serial isnt illegal as long as you dont try to bypass the serial protection so im not sure about extorting people for that either.

i can go download adobe photoshop right now and i havent done anything wrong unless i use someone elses key,keygen or a crack to be able to use it.
