  1. What changes should one make to the website and domain as a buyer?
  2. What changes should one make to the website and domain as a seller?
I recently bought a website, but all errors, for example, 404 & redirects, are going to the previous owner of the GSC.

Domain:

Get ownership.
Change info to yours.
Make it point to your stuff.
Make sure you can renew it.
Website:

Move it to your own hosting.
Change all passwords.
Put your info and look on it.
Add your tracking.
Make it secure.
Connect your tools.
Make a copy right away.
Check for problems.
Make sure it follows rules.

Change the admin login and please don't use admin as user.

Add the site to your GSC and verify so that you'll be getting reports.

What changes to do as a buyer depends on why you bought the site. What did you initially plan to do? Why did you buy it?

As a Buyer -
  • Secure Ownership of All Assets
  • Domain registrar access (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)
  • Hosting account
  • CMS login (WordPress, Shopify, etc.)
  • Email accounts (especially if domain-linked)
  • Google services: GSC, GA4, Tag Manager, etc.
As a Seller -
  • Fully transfer all assets (domain, hosting, CMS, GSC, GA, etc.).
  • Remove any private data (emails, invoices, access tokens
