I have always wanted to start a blog myself but never really for into it. But I did a fairly amount of research on the topic and the tools needed depends on what are your long-term expectations for that blog and what your budget is.
Since I don´t have a clue about any of that, I will give you my 2cc on what I believe to be a must-have type of tools for any serious blogger.

- Feedly - Subscribe to any blog feeds or search for your interested topic to discover new blogs to subscribe to.
- Pocket - A “read it later” app which is also a productive app. Integrated into all the reading apps mentioned previously and lets you save articles for later reading.
- Trello - A task management tool. I just love it! Use it all the time to keep my workflow organize
- Vid to Gif by Imgur. I seriously love this one. It let you caption a section of any video and turn it into an animated gif
- BeFunky - Image resize and editing software
- TinyPNG - Image compression/optimization

If you're using Wordpress, you'll probably need a few plugins like WordFence and others depending on what you want to get out of your blog; someone already mentioned YOAST which I love but I don't get too caught up on making sure all my articles pass with a green light as long as I know I have quality and lengthy content.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve - If you are blogging for fun, then just a computer with a keyboard would do, and you'd be able to blog all you want. But if you are blogging for money, then you'll need to rely on tools, to be able to capture organic traffic. Eg, WP plugins like amp, yoast, those sort of things. Then ensure that your site is properly optimized, by using a free website seo checker.
