As of yesterday, my primary money making website is effectively dead. It lost over 95% of its traffic and all keywords are down anywhere from 20-100 places. I'm assuming this isn't any algo change and is likely a manual penalty. The website was built on an expired domain and I did do some pbn 301s so I'm assuming one or both of these caught up with me.

I had some questions for anyone else whose gone through a similar event.

Does google immediately send the manual penalty message or do I need to wait sometime before I receive it?

After I deindex the pages, is the content reuseable?

I've already begun work on my next site. The competition is stiffer than when I initially started but by no means unbeatable. I'm going to try to use this as a learning lesson not to rest on my laurels.

Now I need to figure out if my pbn was also compromised or if they just got my main site.

This is happening to nearly all the sites, so relax this is a bug and google will restore it back

I hope your right. However, most people seem to be reporting analytics issues. I've actually lost hundreds if not thousands of keyword positions. My competitors definitely have not.

The bug is in analytics/search console reporting less traffic - in his case the rankings disappear which means manual penalty most likely.

It takes few days to a week to get the message in the search console. Wait for it, see what example of "unnatural" links they will give you - maybe you can salvage some of this. Once you get the message, act accordingly (removing some of the links/301s etc) then fill a reconsideration request.

There was definitely something going on yesterday. Saw a lot of fluctuations in the afternoon, but reverted back this morning.

@OP - if you didn't receive a manual penalty message in GSC, it was algorithmic. Generally you would receive the manual link penalty and then the ranking drop would follow there after. Otherwise, I would need more info to see if it's worth trying to recover the website. Website age, types of links, what kind of 301s and where were they from, etc... Shoot me a PM with the details and I'll take a look for you.

If it was a penalty directed to you, you’d have had a notification. Sounds like it’s just SERPS dancing.

Maybe there is some new update running, because some of my sites' ranking positions jumped positively by 2 pages overnight yesterday.

Disavow negative links in your profile, if it's a bug, it will be fixed quickly I assume.

Glad to hear your starting a second site. Is this second one going to be built off an expired domain?

If it's 95% of the traffic, it can only be a penalty - Unless we're talking about low traffic here.

Manual penalty message can come pre or post hit, seen both scenarios

How does indexation looks like at present?

With the recent algo changes Google successfully fcked up lot of legitimate websites. Hopefully they will fix that soon.

i lost 95% traffic on my legitimate site today. No backlinks been built this year for it.
lost a lot of positions.

just create new site and rank it any way dont waste time mate

sad news but this is the game we play.

you have the right mindset.

continue building your new site. if the old one comes back then great if not oh well.

I've heard 301s can be unpredictable sometimes they work sometimes they don't. I'd stay away.

content would be reusable if you deindex it but be patient tho it might recover so give it some time before deindexing

Wait for a few days to see if any messages come through via GSC - sometimes they come through later.

Look at links and see which are most likely to cause a penalty. See if you can find any other examples of sites dropping off the map and find common causes between your site and the example you found.

If things don't work out feel free to drop me a PM - I'd be interested in buying.

Exactly same issue bro lost all the major keywords.
It was my major money website. If its penalty then domain should get fully deindexed but ipages are still there dk what is going on.Lets wait and see.Hope something good happens lool.

It may take a few days for the message to appear in GSC if it's a manual penalty.

If it is a manual penalty for unnatural links, do not worry. Manual penalties for links can be removed. There are services that offer manual penalties removal with 100% money-back guarantee. That is for a reason, they are removable if you know what you are doing.

If it's another type of manual penalty, I am not sure. But for "unnatural links" 100% can be removed.

I'm having a similar issue, manual penalty in my case and i've already deleted some links, nofollow and disavow other bad links but google isn't accepting reconsideration requests.

This might be bigger than it looks.
Anyone, that was running a corresponding Ad campaign, were you effected negatively too? Also, people that got hit did you buy expired domain and where from?

Yes I do have my tin foil hat on. Just in case.
