Hi all, this is my first time posting on here, so apologies upfront if I do anything incorrectly but I'm just looking for some advice.

We have a website (***Link removed by a Mod***) that has historically done around 100k page views a day. Since around the middle of December, the numbers have dropped dramatically and have continued to drop (it's now doing around 6k page views a day). We don't see any penalties in Search Console and the site speed is optimised - so we're struggling to figure out why the sudden drop in numbers.

The only changes that have been made to the site centre around the Google Site Indexing API. We switched the API details in January (the old account was shut down by the previous developer) and then we had an SEO consultant turn off the API for 3-4 days in February. At both times, the numbers went down. However, we've switched everything back on and the numbers have not improved. The site still seems to be found when we try site:***Link removed by a Mod*** so we haven't been removed from the rankings - but the numbers have just fallen off.

We're wondering whether the issue could be related to the Google Site Indexing API or whether the site is being affected by the suspected Google algorithm changes that have been happening from November onwards. We've got a lot of high quality backlinks (websites like talkSPORT, Daily Mail, The Sun, Mens Health and DAZN are just some of the websites that have linked back to us so these are pretty big sites) as we tend to have access to a lot of boxers - so we get original quotes and content that is published on the site and linked to by others. So we're really unsure where to look because there's no obvious issue that we can see yet the issue has almost killed the site completely.

Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated. If it helps sharing some more insight, then happy to do that.

hard to say whether this is the reason... From what I know, pages indexed with google's API don't even get the chance to rank, they get deindexed after few days if google doesn't like them for whatever reason...

whether the site is being affected by the suspected Google algorithm changes that have been happening from November onwards.
this is the most likely reason...

Check the exact date when the drop happened, and cross-reference it with the updates found in this list, and see if you can spot the reason and fix it:
https://developers.google.com/search/updates/ranking
And also check whether the pages that lost ranking also got deindexed in the process, or they're still indexed. I'm thinking that if the pages were deindexed it might be due to some DMCA / copyright infringement strike, these were abound lately.

If the pages that lost the traffic are still indexed then it's almost certainly a google algo penalty....

yeah, something's not right in all of this. If it's not the google updates (although, this also is an update), then you're just a victim of google's effort to get rid of small guys to make room for the big sharks... Speaking of which, what sites are ranking in your place after you've lost the traffic?

You have been hit by Google algo update. I'm afraid you can say goodbye to your previous visitors numbers. It is inpossible to recover fully.

I've observed that when I use an API to index pages, it tends to damage them. Maybe this is the reason. Even redirecting these pages to a new one didn't solve the problem. Maybe yes maybe no.

PM me the site and i will message you which updates have affected your site...

API has nothing to do with it. It's the Google updates...
Maybe, i published 632 articles on a website several months ago and indexed them via the Indexing API and all pages were indexed, but only 160 article shows in Google SERP.

I heard Good will take the whole days of the month March.

632 articles? About what? That's too much.

If the drops align with changes to the Site Index API, that's a solid lead. API mishaps can disrupt indexing, but since it's back on and you're still seeing issues, it's likely not the sole culprit. Since you're not seeing any penalties and your site speed's good, it could well be the algo changes. They've been hitting sites hard, especially ones with content that could be seen as YMYL.

1st question is what type of content you've been submitting by using index API, theoretically, it's used for JobPosting and BroadcastEvent content (so far). So, if the content submitted not belongs to the 2 types, as Google said, you may use them at your own risk: though for a long while nothing happened, but once a day Google determines to fine you, that's the result.
2nd, is the page index status changes at the time along with your indexing API change / shutdowwn > now still low quota? - if you see the number in Not index | Indexed pages had no big changes, then it's little impact by the indexing API
3rd, are all the URLs submitted in API also included in sitemap? if not, try to find the most traffic dropping URLs and see if they are submitted by API or also those in sitemap.
in the last, if you have a way to find which section / part drop most, or almost all content dropped, you'll know if it's something about content quality issue or just get hit by the dance.

One of my client got hit from overall traffic, but after research, we found it's caused by 2 certain keywords: 1 got ranking changes (drop), another keyword is still confusing us: nearly no changes on the ranking, but just the impressions / clicks drop a lot

just my 2 cents.

It might be the Google Update because my website visitor numbers dropped too in the passed 3 months because of it.

Hi arrenmar,

May I ask a question? How did you get the high quality backlinks?

Thank you.
