Webmaster tools, Where are my backlinks??

Last week, Google webmaster tools was showing that I had more than 1K backlinks, I checked on Monday, GWT showed that I have only 48 backlinks. When I search link:xxxx.com, I get nothing, It used to show atleast 50 backlinks. However, the Average position (SERP) keep going up.

My website is like 5 years old and it has been on the 2nd page for my keyword for 3 weeks now.

Whats going on?

Webmaster tools just shows 'a selection of your backlinks' and is never very accurate.

Since YSE died there isnt really a good free way to check your backlinks.
If its very important to you, majesticSEO is good, but at the end of the day, care about ranking not visible backlinks - after all, the backlinks are still there even though you cant see them

BUT u still want to see your backlinks because you want to know what sticking.

That is why you tag them when you make them so you can check and see exactly how many Google has indexed.
