I just read that article and then read a few others all where saying similar things with effecting satellites, I think there was a fuss when magnetic north moved a few years ago with electronic issues or needing to be updated I just thought this was the same kind of thing.

Obviously as the split gets wider then wouldn't more satellites need to be altered or shut down? Either way nothing that's going to happen in my life time.

As mentioned I thought this was more of a drip fed article in relation to a solar flare that's supposed to happen or over due for one..

Yea, it can be that their routes need to be altered in time. Out of the 31 working GPS satellites we need 24 for the navigation system to work, receivers need to see a minimum of 4 of these to be able to tell the position. I think, we are already prepared for this, as it's not something happening suddenly.

I'd be more concerned about things, we don't see beforehand. For instance that car-size asteroid over the weekend, which got seriously close to Earth (~3,000 km) and we noticed it only after it passed, actually 6 hours after its close approach. It wasn't that big this time, but it could have been and it could have hit the planet without us knowing it before the fact. It went closer than any other space rock ever known without crashing into the planet. It came from the direction of the sun, so apparently we have a blind spot.
