Was there a recent algorithm update?

just bumping this up to the top of the home to get any more opinions

As you well know, the sky has been falling every year since about 1997. :D And yet somehow we manage to keep on surviving.

Sssshhhh, don't tell the noobs! Less competition for us. ;)

So has anyone here actually gone up in rankings? All I am reading here is drop drop drop

And you'll always keep hearing a lot more of that. When people's sites go up they're usually not on forums complaining. ;)

Here is what has occured for a site of mine which is around 2 months old. Long, unique content and a natural link building profile drip fed as each post is created. At present I have 12 pages of highly seo'd content plus 20 or so tags.

It looks to me like a sitewide penalty which occured on the 27th August - I have a large portfolio of established sites and non of these have been effected, simply just this site. GWT shows a good CTR on the top rankng pages and analaytics shows a half decent 50% bounce rate so everything points to the site being good for visitors - your guess is as good as mine on this one.......

For you I think the problem could be your tags, get rid of all your tags and I think you'll be good

Thanks for this - why do you think tags are causing the problem? have you seen this before caused by tags?

yeh happened to a site of mine, think it comes down to a penalty for having dupe content. Try it, it worked for me. I never use tags now.

If the tags have been there all along why wouldn't they be a problem until now?

FWIW I have tags on my site and I haven't seen any negative results from using them. In fact my tag pages have higher PR than my front page. Not that PR is worth a shit nowadays, but just saying.

umm possibly a balance thing with tags and pages. When I was penalised for this (and I'm pretty sure it was this as when they were removed I bounced back up) I had 405 tag pages and 200ish posts. Takeachance has got 12 pages and 20 tags, similar ratio.

Mathematically pages will be recurring all over the place depending on how the tags are spread out.

I don't know about the time thing. My site is a .co.uk and when the tag thing happened it was the panda update. The most recent one seems to be for me anyway a link devaluation.

There is certainly some milage in the tags issue concerning duplicate content. I do have around 50% more tags than pages on this particular site. I think this is really only applying (if this is the problem) to new sites as I have many tags on other well established blogs without any problems. It could well be a new filter which kicks in for new sites only....

Anyhow, I have removed them all and am continuing to put up 3 pieces of long unique content each week whilst continuing to link build so I will report back here in a couple of weeks to see whether it did the trick or not.....

I'm not buying that. My site has more than twice the amount of tags, compared to the amount of posts. It's still ranking on page 1 for several keywords.

I think the number of tags IS supposed to be greater than the number of posts, as each posts will naturally be tagged with a few different keywords. I'm pretty sure Google is also aware of this, so I really don't see it as a problem.

The way I am looking at this is it is a new algo change albeit small for fledling sites. This is based on the same data as you also seem to have in that all of my other sites are fine with lots of tags - the difference is this is a new (8 weeks) old site, the rest (and probably the same with you?) are much older. I am confident that it seems to be an site issue rather than any backlinking I have been doing. It will be interesting to see whether removing the tags has the impact.....

Same happened to me around 1st of August. All keywords dropped dramatically :(

If someone goes up - someone else must go down.

Kinda like the old guy with the apple.

same here

site is about 5 months old, dropped one month ago to page 5.........all unique content, the main keyword and other long tail keywords keep bouncing between page 5, 6 and 7.........I really have no idea how to get it back, and the top 10 sites are all crappy static html pages. I've posted this in another thread but I'm starting to think that domain emd + age is more important then regular updating with unique content...

I've also looked in to the google 50 penalty but there's nobody with a real solution. "keep building links and post unique content" is the only thing everybody tells but I wonder if that's true. Some say it comes back after a couple of weeks, some say months, some say years, some say never.

32 of 35 of my sites got a bump up, 3 stayed the same. I don't do any link building, just add posts everyday. They all jump to page 1 from pages 2 through 5. They also had a boost in PR, most went from PR0 to PR3, a few went from PR1 to PR4.

Most are autoblogs with the use on wp unique plugin that I just started using 3 - 4 weeks ago. Only 3 of the 35 blogs have unique wriiten by me content. the rest are autoblog.
