VPN vs Proxy: What's the difference?

I know many of you are still unsure whether to use a VPN or a proxy for changing your IP when registering and managing multiple accounts. Here's a quick comparison based on my personal experience with both tools.

1. Similarities

Both can fake your IP address. This one is pretty clear – no debate here. When a website detects your IP, it will show the address of the proxy or VPN instead of your real one.

2. Differences
2.1. Security
The first major difference is security. VPN encrypts all your traffic before it’s sent to the website, while a proxy sends your data directly without encryption.
✅ Winner: VPN

2.2. Flexibility
- A VPN changes the IP address for the entire system (apps, profiles running on your device). If you want to change your IP, you have to turn off the VPN and switch to a new location.
- A proxy, however, can be assigned to multiple profiles/apps to change the IP address individually. For example, you can assign a proxy to different Chrome profiles to fake IPs for them.

✅ Winner: Proxy because you can run multiple profiles simultaneously without worrying about IP duplication.

2.3. Speed
This factor depends largely on the type of proxy and the service provider. Generally, datacenter proxies are the fastest > VPN > residential proxies.

Proxies usually have a much larger IP pool compared to VPNs. Plus, VPN IP pools are often collected by websites and easily detected.

I guess it depends on the use case. If you want to browse the web securely and anonymously, using a VPN would be better as it avoids any leaks. For normal browsing, scraping, and social media, go with proxies. They're cleaner, so less bans.
 
Some VPN IPs are infested with malicious people using it for who know what.

Sometimes it works well, then a few minutes or hours later IP is flagged/every websites using cloud flare or antibot will trigger the security.

Better to find residential proxies, better to pay for private proxies if you manage multiple accounts (1 IP 1 account)

However, I need to correct a few things:

2.1 Security – It’s not true that all proxies use unsecured connections. Many of our customers use OpenVPN in combination with our mobile proxies.

Also, you forgot an important comparison:

Most websites can detect when you're using a VPN service. Even though the IP changes, it's obvious that an anonymization tool is being used.

A well-configured mobile proxy combined with an anti-detect browser, on the other hand, is not recognized as such. That’s what makes it truly interesting for those who care about privacy and anonymity.

In fact, mobile proxies outperform almost every other type of proxy in most use cases.

Proxies are better in many ways but you can add a layer of security with a VPN in case of a proxy leak.

A solid approach is combining both - running a VPN in the background while using proxies for individual sessions. This helps mask your real IP while keeping each account separate.

If your main goal is managing multiple accounts, proxies are the way to go due to their flexibility and cleaner IPs. However, for better security, a VPN can add an extra layer of encryption, especially when combined with a proxy.
 
VPN: Routes all your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a remote server, hiding your IP address and encrypting your data.

Proxy: Acts as an intermediary, forwarding your requests to the target server, only hiding your IP address without encrypting the traffic.
 
Solid breakdown. I agree with most of this, especially on flexibility and IP pool size.

One thing I'd add from the fraud detection side: some proxies (even residential) get flagged fast because they're recycled or come from suspicious ASNs. Just because it's a "res" proxy doesn't mean it's clean.

Mixing VPN and proxy can be slick, but it can also backfire if the combo creates a mismatch that automated systems flag.

Happy to swap notes on setups that reduce footprint. Been in the weeds of IP scoring for a minute.

Vpn: encrypts your data through their own servers, but because they're their own dc. Most of their ips will be known to websites.

Proxies: depending on the proxy type, like residential, it's way more anonymous, making it harder for websites to identify and block you because you're a bot/running scripts.
 
Honestly, I’ve never had good experiences with VPNs.
 
VPNs are mostly data center IPs and are of poor quality, so they cannot hide personal privacy well, but proxies can

Just bookmarked this because i surely never know difference and use both lol

So between proxy and vpn what should i use for my iphone if i want to play a blocked game on school wifi like roblox? I tried using a vpn and it works, lets me on the game and play but lags some times

also would you suggest vpn or proxy if i wanna create and run 2 instagram accounts on different chrome profiles (on mac) and dont want instagram to flag or detect the accounts
