I cant afford to rent an office at the moment, but I would gain some business if I could rank based on Google local business list. Has anyone succeeded to rank in Google places without actually rent a office?

Sure, you can hit a Mail boxes Etc/UPS Store/Independent Company location and rent a box there. Your address would be 1123 Anywhere St, Suite Box #, City Name.

You'll need a phone that is specific to that business but those are a dime a dozen so that won't be an issue.

Do not use a US Post Office Box as that is something entirely different.

Yes, I did and it works.

However you have to take some caution. Google does not like mailboxes. Therefore make sure that you can receive letters without that there is "Mailbox xx" on the latter. Just a normal address. For example I am supposed to use "mailbox xx" on my address. But I just skip it and use just name + street. Make sure that you actually can receive letters and the postman finds your box with this information. Send yourself some test letters. Then tell google to send you the verification key.

Yep, more than possible it's a legitimate technique.

If you couple a virtual mailbox / office and local NAP citation SEO you can get ranked in multiple cities easily.

Don't forget to buy a local area code phone number with each office though, don't use a 1800 or 0800 number.

Yes! Legitimate might not be the right word for it, but it most certainly does work!

Can I ask what service do you use? How do they know which mailbox your letter should go to without the box number?

Thanks.
