I'm thinking about having video's (youtube, etc) made specifically for my website, and I've heard if done correctly it can be indexed and help with SEO.

    Opinions...........???

Yes if done correctly and if you can get the video enough views, comments and favs, it will rank well. This happens becuase of the authority of the youtube itself.

op is asking if youtube can help with the seo of his site, not if a video can rank.

I have used youtube to index pages and support my other backlinks, but I have never tried it to rank a page on its own so I don't know how effective it is.

I'd also like to know if anyone has experience with this.

What you can do is host the videos yourself and SEO the videos themselves so they rank. You will increase your SERP real estate and get more click throughs.

Links to your site especially from authority sites are going to help improve your ranking. The question is how much. 1 video with a link probably isn't going to do a whole lot. What you should focus on is branching out to all video sites and other methods to gain links.

One of the things I do after I create a video is I try to rank the video in search (not youtube). If the video and my site are targeting the same keywords I typically see an increase in rankings for my site as my video goes up in ranking.

One time I had 7 of 10 spots on the first page for a kw I was targeting from web 2.0s, a youtube video, and my site. All roads leading to me.

What I'm interested to know is if there is text in the video, can that be read by the search engines? And how else can the videos get indexed?

    Need some creativity here.

Certainly does. I recommend making a high quality video people will actually like to watch. This then puts a good impression on your company and also helps as a powerful backlink. Not only this but you will get traffic to your website from the video if you post your link in the description and you can SEO the video so it takes up another position in the SERP's as Google does like to through videos into the mix of SERP's. Go for it :)

Videos are a good way to get link variety and some web2.0 links to your website. Make videos on your long tail keywords so they get into google results faster ! Make sure to link to the videos in your blogs or articles you post.

In my experience... quality videos (with proper tags, descriptions, etc.) work better than any other single thing for SEO. Plus they stay relevant, regardless of Google's constant mission to purge lame content, phony spun articles, bot accounts etc.

The main issue I'm seeing: If it's a good video, other people download & upload to their own YT channels, sites, etc. which dilutes your view count. (I think that's called "scraping?). Unless you're doing a promotional video where you WANT other people to do that - as long as you "watermark" your URL onscreen, people can always find their way back to your site.

While I have seen some rare occurrences with big companies (Like VH1) embed an active link inside the viewable area of a YouTube video (linking to VH1's Facebook page)... for everyone else, the YouTube annotation boxes only allow links to other content INSIDE the YouTube.com environment (i.e., link to a video, subscribe, playlist etc.). It's their sandbox, so that's how they set it up right? That said, here's the exception: The paid ad onscreen overlays allow links outside the YT environment but... that's because they paid for that luxury.

Video is a part of your SEO strategy. I know its the last part.when you think that you have done everything then you should think about Video. For me Its a good way to popularize your website. People search for a video about anything rather than reading an article. That's why video is cool.

I knew that. My intention was to show him how to get traffic by ranking his video. Sometimes ranking a video is easier than ranking a site. If his video ranks and his site's link/URL is mentioned in the video, he's gonna get a lot of traffic from them anyway.

Links from YouTube are nofollow, so while they might be good to have for a mix of your link profile, don't expect any magical changes in your rank after uploading a few videos.

YouTube videos are great, SEO wise, for the same reason that web 2.0s are great. You get the authority of the big domain.

Take other's advice and optimize your videos well. There are many ways to promote the video off site just as you would a money site. A lot of people have told me that blasting the video with social bookmarks and embedding the videos into their web 2.0 blogs works very well. I see no reason why it shouldn't.

You could get impressive result if you optimize it well. Your keyword, title, niche, and quality of the video are the most important parts to get nice result from YouTube.
