Video Content Mangement System?

I was wondering what system others were using to management their large amounts of video content. Is there a system you recommend? I was told just to keep an external hard drive with all the content, create categories and save the shortcuts of videos that correspond to the categories in each but that doesn't seem as efficient as it should be.
