Viable Ecommerce Niche?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but,

thinking about starting an Ecommerce site using DHgate's cheaper items/potential dropshipping however I'm not sure what type of site is most viable.

Option 1: Niche specific site - Site that has one specific need with various products fulfilling that need.
Ex: https://www.elementiumlighter.com/

Option 2: Generalized site - Site that has various products fulfilling more than one need.
Ex: https://shop.coolmaterial.com/

Obviously, each has their own pros and cons however I'd like to hear other peoples opinion on what would work, especially as a new site.

Is it even still viable to compete/create an ecommerce site using DHGate, Aliexpress, Alibaba etc?

I realize this topic was posted back in 2016, however I think it's one that has been asked 1000 times with various answers, so let me give you my own personal insight....

I've ran over 12+ ecommerce stores and have always had the most success with niche stores over general.

There are many reasons to this including....

1. Your building your audience around ONE TOPIC as opposed to general where email followups can be a bit useless. Following up with your previous customers is a HUGE source of revenue and not to be taken lightly.

2. As you continue your journey around a particular niche, you learn more about your demographic and what they truly want, as opposed to a general store where your focusing on a very broad audience, thus not allowing yourself to learn about one in particular.

3. People simply purchase from niche stores over general stores. Think about it......why would they purchase from a general store when they have Amazon and Ebay? There is no way you can compete with those prices or selection.

However, if you're selling, for example, Audi car parts and memorabilia, then you're going to have a ton of merchandise in your store that the big boys simply don't carry.

There are a few other reasons why starting out with niche stores is so important, however these are the top 3. Hope it helps.......even though Im sure I'm a bit too late on the topic. ;-)
