Hi, all...my apologies first of all if this is in the wrong spot. I've been doing a lot of reading around here before joining and posting, but I need some guidance and have seen lots of other Paypal topics in this forum. None that answer my particular question, though.

I have a Paypal stealth account - all has been fine with it for several months, but now they want a SSN or EIN to verify the account. Well, since it's a stealth account, I obviously don't want to give them my SSN. I wouldn't mind applying for an EIN number, but that also asks for SSN. So...can someone please tell me how to verify the account? Or, if it's just not possible, suggestions as to what to do next? Thanks so much!

IMO, SSN/EIN is required when reach 20000$ and 200 transactions in a year and they issue 1099-K for this. It is mandatory as required by the law. They report this to IRS.
Generally to verify an US PP account you just need a bank account to be attached with your PP.
If you do not come under the 20000/200 bracket then its better to call them sort it out as they cannot force you for your SSN.

I dont reall get it why they need ssn to verify your pp account like cyber.surfer says you only need a bank account to verify you pp account. They only ask for ssn if you want to increase withdrawal limit.

This is the email that I received:

To comply with the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) rules, we ask that you submit your Tax ID number to us as soon as possible. Your Tax ID number is one of these:

- Your Social Security Number (SSN)
- Your Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)
- Your Employer Identification Number (EIN)

We are required to obtain tax ID numbers from all online sellers who receive payments for goods or services through PayPal. If you do not provide us with your Tax ID number, your account access will be limited, and you will be unable to request or receive money. After you provide us your Tax ID number, your account will be fully functional.

I'm sure I'm close to 200 transactions, but nowhere NEAR $20K. (Probably not even $1K.)

I wouldn't mind attaching bank account info, but again...it's a stealth account, so the name/address/etc. on the Paypal account wouldn't match my real info. And my real info has been booted from Etsy before, thus the stealth account. So if I used different bank account info, wouldn't that be a big red flag? I don't want to do anything to compromise this account, and I'm nowhere near as stealth savvy as all of you seem to be! I tried contacting the people who set up the account for me, but haven't heard back from them. :(

Nothing to worry about what's on the bank file.Paypal has no access to it. So just add the routing info and account number you want to add. You will be good to go.
I assume your account is not limited yet. Withdraw the amount and leave this account for no further hassle.

Maybe if you call them and say that i dont have SSN now but i have other proofs for verification they will consider it
