I need some kind of IG growth service to start new accounts, and I wanted to know if there were any drawbacks to using it, such as reduced reach or the risk of being banned.

yes. thus why we have created an iPhone farm we first tried API and it was awful
 
API can get profiles flagged. If you are doing uploads using API, then look into doing it on Real Devices since its safer.
 
Yes API based growth usually hurts reach and can lead to restrictions. Instagram picks up on unnatural behavior fast.
 
API is not safer anymore i see with real phones you get higher reach and better overall experience/results

Even when nothing gets banned distribution often feels capped because the activity doesnt look organic to the system.
