USA education is horrible

Hello,

school is just here to keep people quiet: they believe their children have a lucky to become someone important/rich owing to school. Everyone has a chance.

Of course ...

That's why all the rich people put their children in public schools ...

School is just a tranquilizer for the crowd.

If you say that in USA is horrible, then come to Romania. You'll change your opinion in 1 minute.

I disagree. In Romania there are free colleges. Also the education is good quality (not the best but pretty good). THere are many foreigners starting college in Romania, because it's cheaper, it's good and it's accepted worldwide.

I finished my last year of highschool in New Mildford, CT; I got lucky enough to get into this free exchange program and I got to study over there for the last year of HS.

Anyways, throughout HS in Spain (funny how everybody in the States think Spain is somewhere in southamerica hahaha; and to think that we were the ones to discover America... you would expect a bit of knowledge from their side), I used to fail A LOT; never repeated a course tho, but it was a miracle how I got through it. When I go to CT, one of the first exams that we took in the first semesters was math. I can guarantee you that my math level was pretty pathetic back in HS. Results came, and turned out I was the only one with a full 100/100 score... No, as you might have guessed, I did not study for shit.

HS should really be reshapen in every country, and while I kind of enjoyed how the classes were a bit more practical in the US, I still think the level was pretty pathetic, it felt as if I was 4 years ahead of them, and considering my level... that says a lot.

And for those saying school is your job, it is not. Learning is your job, but having to go to a jail-like place to learn should definitely not be how it is approached. There are a lot of things that should change in our education system, not referring only to the US, mainly to Europe. Its one of the most critical parts in our life and it should be taken a look from different perspectives.

I always find it amusing when people start lambasting the education system.

Everyone who has ever received medical treatment - the education system provided that for you.
Ever flown a plane - eduction system
Read a book - education system
Used a computer - education system
Clean tap water - education system
Ever been vaccinated - education system

Funny how people pick and choose parts of a system to argue against it, whilst availing themselves of everything else it provides.

@OP,

If you are getting straight A's without much effort, then maybe you are intelligent enough to have outgrown the system.

That doesn't mean the system is pointless though.

I think everyone arguing against the OP are just venting themselves from overexposure to entitled kids and the preconception that because he's 16, he must be the same way. Keep in mind, he's not saying school is too tough and how he can do less; he's asking how he can do more and why his school doesn't offer it.

Think back to when you were 16. You opened the fridge and said "There's nothing to eat" after your parents just went grocery shopping. There's nothing to do, there's nothing on tv to watch, there's no one to hang around with, school is boring, I have a cold and am dying of the bubonic plague, I'm dying of starvation because dinner's not ready yet, the education in my country is horrible...The op's version of "my school doesn't offer good classes" may not necessarily reflect reality.

Are you guys kidding me? School is VITAL in child/teen development! Nothing can teach a sense of responsibility, work ethic, focus, time management and problem solving like school. You may not get the greatest benefit from what you're learning, but at least you're learning. You're learning how to read, write, arithmetics, the history of the world you live in, all while discovering who you are in the social scheme of things.

Every other teenager thinks the same way you do now, but then looks back at their time in school and wishes they can have that again.

Enjoy the fact that you have 4 years of high school to grow, to have fun with your friends, to not worry about a job or career - Because when that's over, you will know what real stress is.

I think everyone is missing the point here, you're not alone in missing the point and that's the problem. Just because the education system has produced doctors, lawyers and is vital doesn't mean it's perfect. Why, just because it has worked for some should we become complacent zombies. Instead of arguing with the kid, who has a legitimate complaint, why not discuss possible changes?

If the education is so vital to our success as a human race, why are we not improving upon it every day? Why are we just arguing with people that say it doesn't work for them?

Instead of bashing people, lets discuss the problem at hand and discuss solutions. This is the problem with many modern dilemmas, instead of putting person feelings aside, we need to choose sides and fight those that aren't on our side.

In Australia we have a massive problem with Islamophobia, I know its a completely different problem but the same caveman principals are at play. Many people have just chosen a side and stuck with it, no matter how many times they are proven to be wrong.

I would just add that at least in public school you know you are not getting completely reemed. A lot of private prep schools are just as crooked and clearly completely concerend with pretension, advertising, and robbing people blind.

I actually think there is too much emphasis placed on making connections. I think that concept is appealing to dreamers. If you make one or two reliable connections you should consider yourself lucky and honestly school is not the best place for this. The OP is completely right and I think that for 16 he is very astute. I guess the main problem seems to be money and a corrupted buddy system. I do think that kids are forced through a revolving door type education before many of them are given a chance to decide if they even want to go to school. At least for me, as I female I never had a chance when I walked in the door becuase of stalkers, harassment, and constantly having to put up with them instead of being able to focus on an education. So for me, I can't see a solution. People including women and staff and students were just too willing to be corrupt. The issue for me seems to be that most of them don't care about education at all. I guess one possible solution in the US as I see it would be to enforce a federal system for protecting the rights of students that is enforced nationally, to prevent bueracratic coruption.

"Too willing to be corrupt"? "Rights of the student"? "Bueracratic coruption"? Are you kidding me? You should learn how to spell before you go on talking about issues as vague and complicated as corruption.

If you're going to make a specific point or claim, then please MAKE ONE. Cause right now you're just whining, moaning and regurgitating shit you probably heard from your parents, the tv,youtube..... but don't actually know a thing about. What do you even know about a Bureaucracy? You want to "enforce a federal system"? Do you even know what you're saying? You're saying you want to federalize education. And encase you didn't know, the feds ALREADY TRIED doing that. Where do you think the NCLB act came from? It didn't come from bureaucrats it came from your "federal system". Which is broke as shit right now and doesn't have enough money to properly fund the act.

Federalized education is the worse possible thing we can do. Keep the feds out of it. Let states deal with schools like they've been doing.

Once again, the problem is NOT the education system. And the feds have a well documented history of shitting on everything they touch. The problem is >> MONEY. MULA. DINERO. It's the ECONOMY. We don't have enough money to pay good enough teachers, to fund the right type of programs, unemployment is not getting better, people are out of jobs, we are 17 **TRILLION** dollars in debt. America was BUILT ON DEBT. And you can try anything you want to "fix" the education system. But as long as American's wanna keep bitching about school & education, as long as they wanna keep not working..... shit ain't getting any better. So I really suggest you get use to it or just leave the country.

Finally. This goes for people saying "you don't understand the OP yada yada". Just because people are disagreeing with certain things he said, doesn't mean we're saying "16 year olds can't have opinions" or "we disagree with everything he said". The fact is, even if he left his age out of this discussion would have ended up in the same exact place. We are not really talking about schools here afterall, we're really talking about politics which is a taboo subject on BHW.

But the kid said and I quote...

Modern education discourages independent thought and things like entrepreneurship.

That's bullshit. He is painting the entire education system with one massive brush. Have any of you kids ever heard of Harvard Business School? Or Columbia Business School? Cornell Business School? Rutgers Business School? etc etc.

WHAT do you kids thing business majors do? You think they sit around all day with their fingers up their ass playing video games? NO. They are pushed like f##k to think independently and like an entrepreneur.

The university I went to ENCOURAGED independent thought and entrepreneurship. In fact, if I did not go to college, I would NOT have started my own business. NO NO NO. I'd still be working at Petsmart like I did in college. And I would not have many of the skills I have today if it wasn't for my education. You kids can complain all you want but until you actually FINISH SCHOOL, and start living your life.... nobody is going to value your opinion the same way we'd value the opinion of someone who actually finished school. We will respect your opinions, but don't expect people to honor them like we'd honor the likes of Ben Shapiro.

And NO, you don't need to go to Harvard Business School to start your own business. You don't even need to go to college. But I'll tell you what, some of the smartest mfkrs running this country graduated from Harvard Business School or Harvard School Of Law or Columbia or Cornell. Education matters.

The OP wasn't saying that the education is flawed though, he was saying it was pointless, it was there to produce corporate slaves and it discourages independent thought and entrepreneurship.

Those points are all untrue, which is why people are disagreeing.

I agree with you that it's not perfect, but it is being continually improved. Yes, its evolution can be slow at times, but that's a function of the size of the system and not a deliberate government policy to create slaves.

Education is always going to be behind the times to some degree - that's its nature. It takes time for new truths, discoveries, facts and knowledge to percolate down into the education system.

That percolation process though, takes longer in some fields than others.

Technology for example is so dynamic and changes so quickly that the education system always feels way behind it.

And funnily enough it is in the tech sector that we see the most examples of people 'dropping out' of education and becoming wildly successful entrepreneurs.

That doesn't mean education is pointless though - it just struggles to keep up with the rapid changes in some areas.

How is that any different than how a 18-34 year old and beyond would act? "I make 75k but still don't have money to do what I want, my wife doesn't want to do this and that anymore, my friends can't afford to go on the vacations I want to go on." There are people on Wall Street getting $2M bonus on top of their salary who gets genuinely pissed off because it wasn't more. The focus may have shifted but it's still the same framework of thinking and it's a more broad issue than just teens acting like teens. I think too many people blame teens and millennial simply because they encounter more of their stories online. Just because the older generations aren't as open with their thoughts or post on the internet as extensively doesn't mean they aren't thinking and acting that very same way.

and this is the state of the schools today...

United States: Boy Arrested For "Killing Neighbor's Pet Dinosaur"

A high-school student in the US state of South Carolina has been arrested and suspended from school over a writing assignment in which he claimed to have killed his neighbor's pet dinosaur, it's been reported.

Alex Stone, 16, says he was told to write something in the style of a Facebook status update for a project at Summerville High School. But when he allegedly wrote: "I killed my neighbor's pet dinosaur. I bought the gun to take care of the business," worried teachers called the police, local news station WCSC reports.

Officials questioned Stone and searched his schoolbag and locker but didn't find any weapons. (or dinosaurs!)

But police say the boy was difficult during questioning, and he was arrested and charged with disturbing the school, the SF Gate website says.

Stone was also suspended for a week. (apparently for threatening dinosaurs)

The boy's mother, Karen Gray, says she thinks the school overreacted. "I could understand if they made him rewrite it," she says in an interview with NY Daily News, adding the school didn't call her to explain what was happening.

Meanwhile, her son says he's frustrated and would prefer to be home-schooled from now on. (less idiots that way)

"I regret it because they put it on my record, but I don't see the harm in it," he says.

By the looks of your name they obviously invested in the 'right' religious studies.

Yeah we go to MRC (money religion center) and worship money 10 times a day.
