This has been on my mind for a while.

domain.com/location VS location.domain.com

Is there is difference in terms of SEO effectiveness?
Will one produce faster results for SEO ?

location.domain.com will produce you a ranking little faster when compare with domain.com/location

With subdomain you create different SEO entity, while with subcategory you are building one big authority site.
Subdomain SEO is much better if you do Grey/Black Hat SEO, as in case something goes wrong you can just bail on it.
With subdirectory though, bailing after doing some darker SEO is quite difficult and it requires a lot of resources.

If thats the case, it is only thanks to new website bonus. After some time you will end up where everyone is.

Nice comment McPatrick but this is the white hat part of the forum ;-)

So if you go white-hat than you 100% want to go with domain.com/location because than you make use of the authority and backlinks of your domain.

If you make a subdomain you should treat it like a new domain so you have to start from 0.

Thanks for the info W130SN. Good advice McPatrick I will keep this in mind.
I think for my purposes locaion.domain.com will fit better.

This is going to be a test domain for research on a new idea which basically involves a careful mix of white/black hat tactics so I hope this will produce the results I am after.

You can find lot of topics about your question. Considering what i understood from all I read (not tested), sub-domains rank a bit faster and even better.
Please let us know how this will go!

Could you provide evidence for this, any recent article or case study?
