I was recently put in charge to do some seo on one of our shops. As I mainly build and maintain the shops my seo game is a bit rusty. Anyway I stumbled over the url structure this shop has for product urls.

Currently a url to a product is like:

domain.com/category-name/sub-category-name/product-name

I thought of changing those urls to

domain.com/productname and redirect the old urls to the new ones.

Should / could I do this without loosing rankings? And will the ranking of product pages benefit from that change?

If you change URLs you lose ranking. After proper optimize you may gain it again. :)

Sort URL gives long-run benefits. :)

Base on this reply I suggest you don't change your URL and just put some effort to optimize it.

As it's the first post of this member it doesn't weight too much for me. Maybe some more reputable member will comment on that.

It'S quite plain that at first I gonna loose some rankings short term. But I'm more concerned about the mid and long run.
To some degree I could level out the drops for a couple of weeks with ads, but the plan is that the detail pages come back stronger.
