Updating Wordpress can increase your rank? Well maybe

Hi guys,
Yesterday when I browsed into my Google webmaster tools for my site www.bottopia.com I saw a warning "You are running an older version of wordpress. This may leave your site exposed to attacks.". This was true of course since auto-update wasn't working for some reason I was too lazy to manually update the site for over a year. The past month has seen my site however loose position in some primary keywords for example for a keyword I used to rank 1-2 (usually 1) I was 4-5. So I decided to finally do the manual update. Within 1 day I was back to the 2nd position for my primary keyword and I also so an increase in other secondary keywords. Please keep in mind that I did not do any link building for the past 5 days.

So webmaster tools may be useful to look into every once in a while to have an insight of what google bot is looking into these days.

Yup! In every new version of WordPress there will be lot of Security Fixes. Never delay in updating new WP version whenever it is released.

You should delay in updating Wordpress on your blog depending on if your active plugin are compatible with the new Wordpress.
 
Well, yeah G maybe started decreasing the ranks of old WP and other platforms as they are potential malware threats.

Thats why i always hide the WP version

It's really essential to update our platforms. But of course, we need to check if our plugins are compatible with the newer version.
 
When WP is out of date, they demote you.

So keeping it updated will keep you where you are, but if you let it go stale, they'll demote you. So actually updating WP does not "promote" your site, it only avoids being penalized.
 
that's how important why we need to update our softwares/programs. being behind means losing important things specially in SEO.
 
I wouldn't be surprised if Google started going after outdated websites as they haven't had much success battling hacked websites as a source of backlinks.

I believe you are right it was more my site being demoted while it was outdated than an actual increase. I was ranking before...
