I though I would share an interesting experience I just had using the SEO Search Terms tagging 2 WP plugin. And suggest some ways this could be "gamed" for new sites...
I have been using it for the last 6 months or so on an established (2 year old) domain that gets about 1000 uniques per day.
In the plugin I display 100 incoming search terms for each post/page each linked to the page itself and also I add the 3 widgets to the sidebar.
A couple of days ago I decided that the plugin might be making my site look like I was keyword stuffing as its an established site so manny of my pages / posts had 100 incoming search terms displayed on them each linking to the page itself.
So I changed the settings and reduced it down so that it was only displaying 10 incomig search terms for each page/post.
I didnt think much more about it but within 24 hours I saw an enormous and very bad change in my SERPS.
I track about 150 main keywords for this site though it also get lots of long tail ones too. Of these 150 terms I rank for about 5 of them as #1 then for about 60 of them on page 1.
After 24 hours of making this change with no other changes made to the site or any link building done I was completely removed from over 135 of my tracked search terms. The remaining 15 were still in the top 100 but had sropped about 6-8 pages.
My traffic consequently fell by about 85% forr these 24 hours !!!!!
I panicked and changed the plugin settings back to the original ones. i waited 24 hours and low and behold all my original rankings returned to round about the same as before though some had fallen a fewplaces from their previous totally established and settled positions.
So some lessons.....
1. This plugin is haveing a huge effect on my SERP position and for an established site is an easy way to cement your SERP position.
2. For a new site without SERP it might be possible to game the system by adding an "incoming search list to every new post/page" then add 100 target keywords for that particular post each with the anchor text pointing at the page itself. Then as the page gradually gets its "real" search terms then you can gradually replace your "fake" ones so that you never have more than 100 maximum on any 1 page
Has anyone else seen similar or different experiences with this plugin. I would love to hear what your thoughts are ??
