I though I would share an interesting experience I just had using the SEO Search Terms tagging 2 WP plugin. And suggest some ways this could be "gamed" for new sites...

I have been using it for the last 6 months or so on an established (2 year old) domain that gets about 1000 uniques per day.

In the plugin I display 100 incoming search terms for each post/page each linked to the page itself and also I add the 3 widgets to the sidebar.

A couple of days ago I decided that the plugin might be making my site look like I was keyword stuffing as its an established site so manny of my pages / posts had 100 incoming search terms displayed on them each linking to the page itself.

So I changed the settings and reduced it down so that it was only displaying 10 incomig search terms for each page/post.

I didnt think much more about it but within 24 hours I saw an enormous and very bad change in my SERPS.

I track about 150 main keywords for this site though it also get lots of long tail ones too. Of these 150 terms I rank for about 5 of them as #1 then for about 60 of them on page 1.

After 24 hours of making this change with no other changes made to the site or any link building done I was completely removed from over 135 of my tracked search terms. The remaining 15 were still in the top 100 but had sropped about 6-8 pages.

My traffic consequently fell by about 85% forr these 24 hours !!!!!

I panicked and changed the plugin settings back to the original ones. i waited 24 hours and low and behold all my original rankings returned to round about the same as before though some had fallen a fewplaces from their previous totally established and settled positions.

    So some lessons.....

    1. This plugin is haveing a huge effect on my SERP position and for an established site is an easy way to cement your SERP position.

    2. For a new site without SERP it might be possible to game the system by adding an "incoming search list to every new post/page" then add 100 target keywords for that particular post each with the anchor text pointing at the page itself. Then as the page gradually gets its "real" search terms then you can gradually replace your "fake" ones so that you never have more than 100 maximum on any 1 page

Has anyone else seen similar or different experiences with this plugin. I would love to hear what your thoughts are ??

ive been using it for a few months now on an established site, much the same setup as you. At some point I will do some tests on it and post here. About to run a big offer though so I cant afford to tinker right now. I will probably remove it and leave it off and see what happens. Your site might have come back on its own without you putting it back in. I can understand why you did though, 85% is a big drop. Scary.

I look forward to seeing what you experience. I must say I was shocked that google was giving these (on the face of it !!) slightly spammy onpage links so much weight.

The other thing I have found is that this plugin creates a search page for each incoming search term....and whats more interesting iss these get indexed and ranked quite highly in the SERP's

So it's worth looking at your "search" page template....in your theme...because I often find that I have a incoming search term that google is sending traffic to that I dont have any posts !!!

So If you are using adsense on your site then you can add a large adsense block onto your search page template....this means that when google sends traffic to it.....they will get realted adsense immedietly below the page title....

You can test what your search page looks like by visiting

    h**p://mydomain.com/search/mysearchterm

The other thing to note in the settings is that you should select the setting that adds the search term to the post as a tag...

I think part of the issue was that the site had developed in a direction that I had very little specific content for. So although the site has over 15,000 indexed pages ....the actual core group of keywords sending all the traffic were not ones I had actually written much specif content for. So it was almost like the plugin had self perpetuated itself and created its own "mini niche"

Once I saw this happening I did start writing some content for that topic but not that much.

So I think most of the onpage ranking was coming from this plugin. hence the big effect when I removed it

Thats exactly what its supposed to do, help you rank better for terms you didnt even know you came up for. kinda like you said building its own mini niche. If anyone wants to play/experiment with it, I uploaded the plugin here:

I use this plugin in all of my blogs since their first day and set to display 10 incomig search terms. It works well.

Displaying 100 search terms is too much man. Last year one of my blog with 5000 uv/day which set to display 20 search term got deindexed. A message also sent to my webmaster tool said "this site may violating our tos...etc.

So I deactivated this plugin, and request reconsideration. You know what, a month later my blog appear again on SERP.

Keep display 10 search terms only. One more tips, blend the incoming search terms with tags. Then your page remain "clean" and visitor friendly

Your story intrigues me and reassures me ... I explain :
I installed this plugin there two days ago on one of my websites (well ranked) and my traffic go down violently (70% !).

At first I thought a sandbox because of the new algorithm (as said in a recent post), then I stumbled on your thread...

My problem is similar to yours.
So I just remove this plugin, and now I'm waiting, hoping to go back in the top asap.

If this plugin can have such adverse effect, it could have nice effect...

You should consider that sometimes a site drops in rankings right before it shoots up to an all time high...

Yes, of course, but for losing 70% of my traffic in 48h... It's brutal !
    My AdSense is pale today.

I stopped everything (blast, SEO, ...) and right now, I'm waiting.

yeah that is pretty brutal. we really gotta do some experimenting here and figure out whats going on and if there is a way to tune the results. We have all had such different reactions.

    agree totally
the site ive put it on has about 9000 links in yahoo
8500 uvs a month and rising at about 10% per month
was about 200th for main keyword no idea why as everything was done same routine as other sites that are all ranking first page.
went up and down and is sitting at 18th now for main keyword (before I installed this plugin)
will give it a week to see where it settles
if its lower time to delete plugin if its higher time to roll it out

I have seen only positive results myself so far. I get the occasional term to drop off the map for a minute but that don't make me flinch. 99% of the time it comes back stronger in a few days.

You don't want this to generate any more pages. Like don't let it create links to search results or create new tags for your posts. That's just duplicate content and it'll hurt you way more now than ever before.
