Would someone clarify what "untargetted SEO" is exactly? I have read that it is link building with absolutely no anchor text. Does that mean untarggeted SEO are links that use your domain name?

This is actually more commonly referred to as: naked anchor text links / naked anchor text / naked url

Basically it's when you use your url as the anchor text. Remove the # symbol below.

    <a#href="http://mydomain.tld">http://mydomain.tld</a>

well there are some tactics in seo which will not get you targeted traffic and these are...!

    Meta Keywords
XML Site Maps or Submitting to Search Engines:
    Link Title Attributes
Header Tags Like H1 or H2:
Keyworded Alt Text on Non-clickable Images:
    Keyword-stuffed Content:
Optimizing for General or Peripheral Keywords:
Targeting the Same Keywords on Every Page:
    Focusing on Ads as Links
    Mad-lib Doorway Pages
Linking to Google or Other Popular Websites
Redirecting a Keyworded Domain to Your Real One
    Republishing Only Others' Stuff
Making Minor Changes to Freshen Content
    Nofollowing Internal Links
Main Navigation That Links to Every Page

this might be useful to you i suppose....!

I would say that "untargetted" SEO links are not only the links with the URL as your anchor text, but also your brand name and anchor text like "click here", "learn more", "read more" etc. The point is that you don't use your keyword as the anchor text - as organically human beings would rarely refer to some company by a keyword- but create "human links" to your pages, where people can refer to your site by sitename, domain or "read more about it here"

These links have their own name:

    - branded anchor links
    - generic anchor links

The goal with them is not to get untargeted traffic, quite the opposite actually. The generic/branded anchors are added to simulate natural human variation, but typically the content used in the various web properties you create will still reflect that of the target keywords.

So as an example if your keyword was "dog food" your webpage/article should be about dog food and link back to your main website with "click here" or "your company name here" and similar variations of both anchor types respectively. Google still uses contextual analysis, so just because your link doesn't contain targeted anchor text doesn't mean some of the keywords from your content can't end up getting passed through as potential keywords to rank your site for.

You wouldn't want to use an article on let's say "pay day loans" when targeting dog food.

What's then the use of untargetted SEO? Or this is just when you write the article on topic but leave no link to your site in it at all?
