Unrelated Content Linking Questions

I have some keywords (mostly model numbers) that I'm trying to rank for.

The problem is that writing many articles for something like a linkwheel can be difficult on something so specific as a certain model or brand. All the various articles end up sounding the same since it's such a specific subject.

Has anyone tried using somewhat related content instead of exact content for this process?

For example, you might use a generic golf article to link to a specific type of golf club. Does this work or is it not related enough to be a link?

OR does the content of the web 2.0 page not even matter as long as the anchor text is what I need to rank for?

(By the way this doesn't have to be a linkwheel... it could be link pyramid, pushing, article backlinks, etc.... don't get too tied up on the type of link please).

It's not so much the content as it is the anchor text... you can have something that is vaguely related and get the google love. It's the anchor text that is getting you the link juice that you need and having a somewhat related/vaguely related/mildly related artice is about all you need.
