No, the title is not a lie or some fake article everyone started spreading around; this time, it comes from Elon himself.

It seems you will be able to buy the blue badge for the small price of $8 USD.

Along with that, you will get:
  • Priority in replies, mentions & search
  • Ability to post long video & audio
  • Half as many ads
Public figures will have a secondary tag under their username, similar to what politicians have.

That article from Verge is talking about another subject.

You see the source in the thread, the plan seems to actually be that for $8/month you'll get a blue badge, which won't mean "public figure" anymore.

Public figures (the actual blue badges now) will have other method of identification, such as the second tag like in the example below.

right. If it is open to everyone twitter will become a hub of fake news. people would pay $8 and get verified account and start propaganda

Not really.

With the new plan, the verified badge won't mean "public figure" anymore, it would just mean "real person".

All people associate the badge with having some authority. Your posts will rise to the top if you are having a verified badge. It's a psychological issue that will take years to overcome. There will be a lot of pain with this early I believe.

With this I agree.

It's mostly to try and stop the scam-bots, but obviously will have some heavy side-effects.
 
An important detail missing from your title is that it's $8 PER MONTH! Not just one time $8.
That's basically like Youtube Premium and all other subscriptions.

To me, $8 per month to have the privilege of creating all the content for a website seems pretty expensive.

The services will just change title from "twitter blue badge" to "twitter public figure verification", as there will be an extra tag for public figures.
 
My guess is other companies will do this as well. For example Meta, but they will probably increase the price by a lot. This is usually what all the social media companies are doing all the time. They copy each other and see what works. This is why Instagram got reels and YouTube got shorts.

We are already at a point where so many random people have the blue tick. Elon knows it. Random journalists or authors got one. On Instagram, you can literally be an absolutely unknown football player from a tier 3 country playing in the 2nd team of a second league club and you will be verified. The same goes for singers, who obviously fake their way to fame by using bots, etc.

Meta could generate a shit ton of money by selling this, and they need the money. These companies don't care about integrity, they already sold themselves and their values a long time ago.

It's somehow bad because because apart from being a status symbol, the verified badge is a signal of trust - to an extent. I don't think a secondary text tag can substitute for it.

I like the idea, but having different colors for "real person" and "public figure" is better.

That having been said, I believe that "Patreon" style of monetization where users tip other users would have been better. The platform could make maybe up to 30% as service charge

Agree.

The two different colors badges idea was proposed multiple times by the crypto community. The proposal was one orange badge for which you pay $1 USD in Bitcoin, and the regular verified badge; maybe that was Elon's inspiration.

They already copied Patreon on Twitter, called it "Super Followers".
