You can find a lot of knowledge in this forum. Some are better in IM, some in IT, other in programming etc...

Another tip, or workaround if you will: use teamviewer (free) edition to remote into your boxes if you can't rdp into them. And yes, old laptops make fine machines for almost any purpose that you want. It's no secret I've got some hardcore servers that I own in a colo running both vmware and full machine processing.
Truth be told, I just logged off a laptop I've got in a location that is doing nothing but running proxy fetchers/checkers and then uploading good working proxies for me to one of my webservers to be used for my scripts and other programs. That's all that laptop does. 24x7

I suppose this works if you have a spare laptop lying around, but buying a new laptop just to do this is horrifically inefficient. You can buy a single server and then just partition it into 20+ separate VMs rather than having a bunch of random laptops hanging around.
But the basic tenants of what OP is saying are all true, you just don't need (and probably shouldn't) do this with a laptop (at least not necessarily).

You can't run some scripts/programs on VPS. And if you don't want to run them on your main PC, you can use your old one... My old laptop uses around 2€/month... I have VPS and debian server on 1 gbit link but I also run this little laptop "server"

I have been flirting with this idea for a lil while and want to make sure this will suit what I "think" I am wanting.. I say think because I don't fully have a grasp on task I want to complete (still learning)..
What I am thinking is, once setup I will use to run scrape box or other software remotely.. I obtained a box from work. I installed a cracked version of win7ultimate. I have read a few other pages related to the conversion, and I am not sure if I should be following guides related to file server or other type of server.
Am I off with what I am trying to do? What types of tasks are you guys doing with these PCs that you convert? I would appreciate any input, feel free to pm me if you have suggestions. Sorry if my questions are noobish and my posts long...

One of the things you guys need to consider when you hear the word "server" is what the hell are you anticipating doing with these boxes when you get them up and running? Usually servers have tons of storage space, room to grow with cpu sockets and tons and tons of memory to drop in so that you can start running intense enterprise apps off of them or even just serve images off of them as well. I'd be curious to hear what you need this "server" to do that your laptop couldn't do with win7 x64?

Am I the only one that realizes laptops are NOT meant to be run 24/7 as a server is? Think I'm wrong? Go run prime95 on a laptop for 3 days and see if it's still running.
Sure that's a bit extreme but I'm sure everyone gets my point.

No problem. It's the most energy saving method you can do, because it uses a minimum of energy compared to any pc or htpc. But don't forget to harden your windows firewall - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Firewall#Windows_Vista (same in Win7)
