Ok here is my little contribution to this great forum:)

If you need server to run some legal stuff 24/7 and you have your old laptop lying around here is simple step by step how to do it. It consumes only around 30W with closed lid.

    1. Install fresh copy of Windows XP or Windows 7.
    2. Enable Remote Connection Protocol.
    3. Set password for your windows account.
    4. In Power Settings change to "always on" and change setting in Advanced tab if you close the lib it will not go to sleep.
    5. If you have static ip and more than 1 port on your modem try connecting it directly to modem and maybe you will get dynamic ip for you laptop. If you have static or dynamic ip with 1 port connect it to your router (with cable or wirelessly) and forward 3389 port to your local ip of your laptop. (I prefer dynamic ip for things I run.)
    6. If you have dynamic ip register account at no-ip and install no-ip software on your laptop.
    7. Now you can remotely connect (with RDP) to your server from anywhere you are.

For better security it's better if you forward any other port to your local 3389/tcp port. Example: forward 25543/tcp tp your local ip:3389/tcp.
You can also use your old desktop PC but it consumes more electricity. If you have 64-bit PC with 2 gb ram or more you can run vmware or hyper-v for multiple OS installations - in case you need linux and windows for your scripts.

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

    1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Never run illegal stuff from your ip.

Yes, you can. But, you might end up paying more on your power bills. Also, there is a risk of your server going down, when there is no power unless you have long lasting inverter/UPS. Laptops are better for this process IMO.

You can do the same thing with linux, and also install vmware, for windows if needed.

What is the minimum Laptop/PC system requirements to run it as a server and the speed of the internet connection?

Another way around this as from my experience the Windows Remote usually Breaks up, and cant be accessed from out of a a LAN is to use a combination of Hamachi (which gives you a unique IP Address) and a Free version of VNC.
    - Download and install hamachi (old version) on the machine you want to act as server.
    - Install hamachi on it and take note of its unique Ip given.
    - Install VNC on the same machine you want to act as server and during the installation steps, make sure you check the VNC Server and that it also runs as a Service.
    - If done properly you should see an icon on the bottom right of the tray for you VNC Service. Right click and choose to give it a password and NOTE that down too.
    - Now go to the machine that you would want to access the server from and install a copy of Hamachi, and install VNC Client service.
    - Fire up the VNC Client and put the IP address you got earlier from hamachi server you were setting up.
    - You will be prompted for a password use the one that you put when configuring the VNC Server Service.
    - Hit enter and you should have a stable Remote Access to your machine no matter where you are in the World.

Another Approach with same goal below.

    Hope that helps.

Home server is cheap solution but vps or dedicated server has faster connection and is better to go for one.

It really depends on what you need server for... For social exchange, proxy scan or similar tasks you don't need high speed internet.. I have 20/2 link at home and it's enough for my needs. You can not use this for hosting obviously... Windows XP or even 7 requirements are really low... you can google it...

Wow. Great idea. I have a laptop with a screwed up screen, and I never thought about this. Might run some custom software on it.

If you need both, linux and windows for your scripts you can run vmware or hyper-v... Just don't do any illegal stuff from your ip.

ionik: I wouldn't recommend Windows XP. It's old OS, and soon it won't be supported anymore (well, from April 4th, 2014).
There is no minimum internet connection speed required. Faster is usually better, depends what do you with your server. Don't forget to secure your server!

This is pretty much common sense, no?
