Reviews and reputation of the company around the net.
If it's an seo company operating on BHW then read all the reviews on their BST thread and look for the reputation of the sellers.
That's all I can advise you. Yet you are not garanteed that they will not f*uck up your site.

Their reputation says about half of what's needed to be said. It's easy to tell when a bullshitter knows nothing about SEO. Do they provide reports? If so, what is contained inside of them? Do they give you a diverse backlink profile? If so, do they provide do follow AS WELL AS no follow links. Do they provide social signals? From which social networks? Things that you should ask any company when hiring them.

I know you've only been here a month, but go look at the shitlist section. We have had reputable members take money and run. We've had noobs take money and run. Not so much with SEO though. Haven't seen an SEO shitlist yet. But please look around before posting things like that. It's misleading.

Purchasing a SEO service is just like purchasing any other product!
You are either a smart buyer who does research beforehand. Making sure to check the reviews and feedback of the service, even contacting people who have purchased the service beforehand and asking them how they felt about it.
Or you are a dumb buyer who just chooses the one with the prettiest logo and banner.
However keep in mind SEO is not a tangible product, you will have to wait to get results! Sometimes more than you'd like to. The advantage of buying on BHW is that the people selling have created a reputation here and if they fail to deliver they'll certainly refund you or find some way to make it up rather than hurting their name.

A start would be to look at their website and try to find any links to their clients or a portfolio. Analyze the work they've done previously.
Honestly, you have to know SEO almost as good as they know it, or even nearly better. You've got to have the knowledge to be able to analyze their work on your own. Also, you need to have enough SEO smarts yourself to be able to see through their BS sales pitches.
After you have a decent understanding of what you're purchasing a service for, you should be vetting companies and reading their reviews online. Hopefully you would have a understanding of reviewing your own website's stats through something like Google Webmasters Tools and Analytics.
The easiest option is to simply get a good recommendation from a trusted friend or someone that does online marketing.

That wasn't the case in every scenario. I'm aware of how a forum works, but when two members get into a few debates, things escalate like the did when members were talking about fighting one another at the 2014 BHW meetup. I was one of them, but I was pulled into it, I didn't initiate anything. I was just telling SKyRocket to avoid attempting to antagonize me. It's lame and it gets old, so I defused the situation. Anyways, yeah I said what I had to say originally to the OP. I'm out.

First I would search and read reviews on the company and then I'd check and review the link profile for the SEO Companies website to see the quality of links that they're building. Trust, reputation and reviews from past customers are all things I'd analyze and think this will help you to choose a trusted SEO company to work with. I hope this helps!

I totally agreed to this. I might get negative rep by saying this, but providers be it in bhw or outside of here do provide shitty products or services too even how nice their reviews , portfolio, or even thousand of reps here. They do not prove anything when dealing with seo they going to do it for you. You got to drill deeper in their works. In here, when I wanted some previous works from some bst sellers, they rejected my request and told me they are reputable and have many positive reviews and serp charting to see. I immediately turn away from those memebers bst. I do not see why the reason why not letting me see their previous works???
But having said that, there are few good bst members here, but need to find out on your due diligence.

Well, back on topic: I wouldn't outsource the SEO for my money sites, ever. Only outsourcing I do is for tiers around my sites.... If the SEO company gets it right, you're happy and life goes on. If they go wrong(which is most probable) you'll blame them for life even if it's not their fault.

I would ask them for any past projects they have done. Most SEO companies are just scam and rip-offs though, making you pay over a few thousands dollar for an SEO job that only cost tens of dollars.

I don't know what companies you've been dealing with. I run an SEO company and we charge accordingly. But nothing like what you're talking about. Although, I have see some outrageous things. Some charge $200 just to evaluate your website and the on site optimization.
