Is Topical Authority really enough to rank a brand-new site now, or are strong backlinks still the ultimate tie-breaker? Some say you don't need links if you have a perfect topical map, but I still see 5 strong contextual links beating 50 unlinked articles.

What is your strategy for a fresh White Hat project: finish the content map first, or start link outreach from day one? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Topical authority is important, but backlinks still play a key role in 2026. I’d say focus on building a strong content map first, then start outreach for backlinks. You can rank with a solid topical map, but good links will still give you that extra boost.

Topical authority helps a lot, but it’s not enough on its own.

You can build a solid base with content first, but a few strong backlinks still make the difference.

Two completely different requirements. You need to be aware of how Google crawls your website, assesses all ranking factors combined on the page to decide content authoritativeness, and then decides to serve indexed content to visitors.

Ideally speaking you'd want to align both your inbound & outreach marketing strategy for a website to appear higher on search results; where you focus, depends on the keyword difficulty + competition.

Topical Authority helps, but links are still the tie-breaker in competitive SERPs. I build content first, then start link outreach early (even with a few strong contextual links).
