Ahrefs is the best imo, and you don't need to buy it, there are people on Fiverr selling full reports.

I use Moonsearch.com. It's free -- no stupid limitations, payments, signups, memberships, -- just check backlinks and anchors in a pathetical design.
 
Am using some of the tools that might help you to check backlinks.

Openlinkprofiler ...org a service like ahrefs but free. Hey have a sucky crawl rate but the service is free.
 
I would recommend backlinkswatch, though the best results can only be obtained through paid services like ahrefs.
 
As with most things, you get what you pay for with SEO tools.

Why don't you see if you can't split a ahrefs pro account with a friend or something, I use the same account as two other colleagues and have never had an issue.
 
I've tried a lot of tools to check backlinks, but in truth the best for me remain Majestic SEO and Ahrefs. Provide very detailed information. Especially if the benefits paid to their plans.
