All in all, of course, it all looks pretty stupid, but it happens from time to time. How could you throw away a hard drive with 7,500 BTC? How could you even throw away the hard drive? The guy threw it away in 2013 and is still looking for it. We can make a mistake blindly in a minute, and then try to fix it for quite a long time.

It's not just crypto. I witnessed the same issues on wires a few weeks ago. Connection of mine wired about a quarter million to the wrong people - woops! Gone.

I am one of those. Not 7500 BTC, but 28 BTC

Saved from 2011 or 2012.

Didn't even buy them. Someone I knew online asked for help in renewing a bunch of their domains. I obliged, then they had a lot of difficulty paying me back and finally I took them up on their offer to get paid in BTC.

Figured out how to setup a wallet. Saved the key, got paid.

Then forgot all about it.

Changed computers about 6 months later. Got rid of the old machine. Didn't even realise I had BTC.

Then a few year later, BTC went to $1K. Saw someone random news article.

Realisation dawned. Heart sank.

Year changed. Price rose again.

And it never stopped.

A regret I carry with me till this date.

It always looks wrong in history. It seems that these are such simple little things, but they lead to losses.
I think it is optimal to keep financial materials on two flash drives. Primary and backup. But this may not save you, of course.

When you're a young late-teenager, upgrading from the first used PC you bought with your income that never grew beyond XP and threatened to kill itself when you tried to install Windows Vista to a shiny new PC that came with Windows 8 pre-installed.

All you do is backup your PSDs, your MFA site code, your spreadsheets and most importantly your songs and movies and you're done.

My first was a hand-me-down from a cousin. A beautiful huge off-white machine with a whopping 32 MB RAM and a 4 Gig HDD.

My second was the one I purchased and had the BTC on. It was a Celeron (in the times of P4).

The one I upgraded to was a P4.

There was a situation (judging by the conversation) with a virus that changed the address of sending funds to its own. As a result, the funds went to the fraudster. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?
 
A Brazilian blogger with over 7million subscribers on youtube has lost a cid phrase from Ledger. Lost over $366k in bitcoins. Ledger sheet was stored in notes, apparently discarded by the housekeeper. Reported on 11 November at X.

Another blogger showed his sids phrases from two of his wallets during a stream and lost about $60k.
I even wonder how it was possible to do that. Apparently, he chased a penny while doing the stream, and as a result he lost much more.
 
Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin was hacked in May this year. As a result, 4502.9 BTC (~$305 million at the time, currently ~$437 million) was stolen.
 
Is money, nothing big, I don't see one taking precautions to escape that....except you are the one hunting. It is good to be careful, but cryptocurrencies is just another nightmare. It can be hacked. So just do something, and ensure the network matches because sometimes, the platform you use matters. It is better to do it no cross-platform

The beginning of the thread outlines several ways you should use to save your money. On the one hand you are right, on the other hand, the same losses can happen with fiat funds. I think so.

That guy who threw away his hard drive with 7,500 bitcoins is trying to move on in his quest. Although the disk is his property, the fact that it's in a landfill could create legal issues. For now, he's offering authorities 10% of the value or compensation of $629 million. Authorities are refusing, citing legal rights to the trash. And it looks like they may be right.
