In 2024, the crypto industry suffered more than $3.01 billion in damage from malicious hackers. Of that, about $2.15 billion was lost as a result of more than 300 hacker attacks - a 30% increase from 2023. The remaining $834.5 million fell prey to fraudsters. Only 300 hacker attacks? In an entire year? That's probably just the ones that got caught.
The Ethereum blockchain accounted for 47.3% of stolen funds and 34.8% of hacks. Bitcoin came in second in terms of damage with a 14.6% share, and in terms of attacks, this network came in fourth with 3.6%.
DeFi continues to be the main target of hackers - 53.5% of all losses are related to their hacks. The biggest incidents of the year include attacks on DMM Bitcoin ($305 million), PlayDapp ($290 million) and WazirX (~$230 million).
Over the course of the year, about $488.5M worth of stolen assets were recovered.
I don't think my wallet is in danger of being hacked, more likely breaking whales.
