So, lately a lot of people here are wondering what really make's a site an authority. I had the same question too a couple of months ago, and now I'm getting somewhere, and I wish to share some of that stuff with you. Some people think that authority come's from putting up some content on your site, and then wait to gain an authority status, well its not like that.

Simply slapping up 20-30 posts on a wordpress blog focussing on some money keywords here is certainly not going to make your site an authority. I would say the minimum ammount of posts you will need are 100+, with a variety in lengt. Like, one day you'll post an article with 500 words, the other day you post an article with 2000 words. Google tends to rank articles who are very long higher, and they also get shared a LOT more by users.

But then again, content alone won't cut it. Your site needs to be present on everything. Literally every website that it is worth to stick a link on, you should do it. Vary the anchor text, and mix up the targetted urls. Go for about 20% of the links to the homepage, and 80% to the articles and the sub pages.

Social media is also a very important factor. Don't only stay on Facebook and Twitter.. Everyone is doing that! Get your site on Pinterest, Diigo, reddit, stumbleupon, technorati, buzz, delicious, Linkedin, Myspace, Google+, Tagged, Orkut, CafeMom, Github, and there are a ton of other websites that you can gain a healthy link from. Mix up the social profiles, and use the sites for a while to make your profile look active.

Web 2.0's should also be included, but then again thousands of people are doing it wrong. Sticking up a 500 word article on a Wordpress blog is just not going to cut it anymore. You don't think that after all these years google would consider the links on a wordpress site with a single article a little bit different? If you decide to create a wordpress web 2.0 site to link to you then do it good. Make the wordpress site itself an authority. Stick up 10-15 Unique (NOT SPUN) articles on it, do your social stuff, profiles and some basic backlinking. Also try to add atleast 1 article to the web 2.0 property monthly to keep it a bit active, so a handy tip is to always note down the web 2.0's you create (important)

User engagement is also a very nice boost to authority, as google sees that people like your site and even conversate about it. Tweeting with people, adding a forum to your site, and reply's to other sites with your profile are also a very good idea.

Well, im sure I must have forgot something in this list, as im a bit tired and my level of brain activity has drowned till almost zero after a long day of hard work, so if you have your own suggestions please add them in the thread. It might also occur that you have a question because I didn't explain a sentence correctly. You are allowed to ask me questions in this thread, and I will answer them for you. But above all, I hope that this guide has helped you to give your site some more Authority!

Thanks for the post. I will try some of these on some of my sites.

I was just unsure if you have created an authority site before or possibly just made up an algorithm on paper as to what you think would create one?

A simple formula:

1) Buy an already existing domain. Gets you almost automatic natural authority.

2) Create a tree or silo of 15-20 different related niches. The crucial thing is that the keywords in these sections should all be able to stand on their own as separate micro-niche sites of 6-7 pages each. Put them all together under under one umbella = compelling authority.

3) Link strategy should focus on high PR backlinks, and considerations as listed in the OP.

Yes, I have been able to create an Authority site, but it took me a while. I'd figured I'd post this nice tutorial to speed things up a little for people with the same goals

For authority in your niche get link pyramids, at least 3 articles on your site, high pr backlinks from social media sites.

Hi johandr,

Makes sense gaining authority not only by posting lots of valuable articles but engaging people to the site too. What you think about press releases? Maybe it would help spreading the "brand name" around.

Best Regards,
John

I think this is the general SEO strategy anyone should adopt if they want to make any kind of long term website. Good tips, but I would change the title to simply "Tips to make your site", and leave out the authority bit. Thin affiliate/spammy sites are something of the past now I believe, and if anyone is not doing what you posted, then they are not considering SEO as a central part of their strategy. This is very similar to my own method I use to rank sites and it is working sweetly.

Press releases are definately a great way to get some branding going for your domain, and if you can afford them I would definitely recommend them, also for variation in link type.

i think creating brand name profiles with links pointing to the site's home page help with creating authority. So do press releases published on high PR sites.

Thank you for posting this. It is hard to find some quality tips out there on the basics of getting traffic / authority / page rank. So many people are trying to buy there way in only to get smacked down by Google on the next update, when a little hard work into building some web 2.0's like you mentioned above and getting active in the social media will do the trick quite nicely.
