Time Warner Cable

At least you guys can get a cable connection - where I live in the mountains the best I can do is ADSL - not even ADSL2 because the exchange hasn't been upgraded. I can't even get a decent wireless connection because I am 50m on the wrong side of the hill - I have literally at times had to sit in my car at the end of my street to get a wireless connection on the laptop.

Cable? ADSL? I have goddam dial-up! No one...and I do mean no one...can get us high speed internet in the area where I live. The local cable company, Charter Communications, says that we live five miles out of their service range. AT&T doesn't service our area in reference to high speed anything. Nor does Verizon. DSL? Not so much. Can't get anyone to do that either. Before I met my husband and lived in a REAL town, I had high speed. Now, if I want anything faster than 44 kbps (yes, you read that correct folks), I have to go into town with the laptop and mooch off of Burger King wireless. Either that or go over to my mom's house and use her high speed.

I, too, am stuck on dial up as nobody runs anything into the boonies where I live but I can't even get 44kbps, it's fucking 28.8kbps. And that's if I'm lucky and reconnect 50 times. Usually it connects at 26.4kbps.

I thought the 40kb/s was bad when I lived in a hotel. This shit is fucking hell. Just setting up blogs is such a pain I almost want to give up and go back to playing poker full time.

Have either of you tried Embarq? I thought I was completely hopeless and lost when I lived with my mom and fucked with Dial Up forever.

OMG! I thought I was the only one who had to live like this! I don't know who in the hell these internet providers think they are but it just isn't right for them to not get their asses working to ensure everybody can have access to high speed. 24-7 bitches; get on it!

Every time I go to someone else's house and use their high speed, I feel like moving the couch and doing a fucking cartwheel. However, I usually just sit there in utter amazement that a page really doesn't take 2 hours to load.

Have you ever had to cancel a download, because much to your dismay, it is several hundred MB, and you would be in a wheelchair before that shit finally finishes? I do it all the time.

Hahaha. I've learned to love download managers and stay away from anything bigger than 100mb.

There's not a chance anyone will be bringing broadband out here unless it's a wireless connection. I'm so far out in the boonies I don't even get a cellphone signal. I mean there's like 5 houses on my "street" (which wasn't even paved until 10 years ago), all at least a mile apart. I can get satellite out here but that's so expensive, almost as slow as dial-up and I've heard way too many horror stories about it.

Edit: If you have some neighbors near by you could talk to them and see if they would be interested in a long range wireless setup. There's a lot of forums around where you could get help setting it up. I thought about doing that here but I don't plan on being here much longer. Some people dream about living in the country, I hate it. I'm a city boy.

Ooooooooohhhhhhh, stedenko. I've got ya beat buddy...lol. Not only is our road still not paved, we are in an epic battle with one of our neighbors (he stole one of our dogs and then called animal control saying he was running through the neighborhood, so we decided to boycott cutting our grass). Sure, Charter Communications would be happy to bring cable down our road but the last time I checked, to make it worth their while, you have to have 30 homes on the road willing to sign up for their service.

Did you both just time port from the early 80's? My goodness, my town has about 1500 people and comcast wired us about six years ago for high speed. We have more cows than people! What is the population in your town? Eight? Delmages, I believe it is time for an ultimatum with the hubby. 'Either get me where I can get high speed internet or..... your to the curb' Just kidding

Anyway, I have DCHP and rarely get a different IP. The way the tech explained it to me: We have such a low number of high speed subscribers (around 100) that we are basically on a static IP because nobody ever restarts their computers to request a new IP. In other words, if I am the one out of the hundred who requests a new IP, it will assign the lowest IP back to me. For example, of the hundred online, my ip address is xxx.xxx.xxx.35. I then disconnect and ask for another IP address. The system will look for the lowest address possible. It checks 1-34 but they are taken. 35 is the first one not taken. (no shit, I just released it) It will then reassign me to 35. So my IP is exactly the same as when i started. Now if somebody would release their IP while I had my IP released, I could potentially get their old one. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen often. He could of lied as far as I know. But it seems accurate.

Now, justthinking, don't be getting all sentimental on me. Of course I have already had that conversation with my husband! I live in a podunk town called Kalkaska, population roughly 2200. While the county itself is relatively decent sized, a good portion of it is rural. We have lots of cows here too but evidently they take precedence over the high speed internet. Now my in-laws, they live in an even smaller town about 60 miles away. Do they have high speed? Sure as hell they do, and wireless no less.

@ Coreygeer - Any kind of DSL will work man. They all give you a new IP everytime you disconnect, unless you specifically request a static (fixed) IP. Again, I bought a DSL Lite connection from AT&T just for BH stuff that requires a new IP a lot, and it's worked pretty well for only $20/month. You can get faster connections than that though, if you want.

I guess I technically live in a town, though I've never seen the town part, made up of a few hundred people and I think they get DSL. I just live in a really rural area populated by farmers and cattle and whatnot. It wouldn't be worth it for the phone companies to rewire all the phone lines and set up stations or whatever it is they have to do to make us DSL ready and certainly not a cable company. There's just not enough people out here.

Ah, I only asked because my mom's internet is with Embarq, it's DSL
They told us there is no possible way to reset the IP Address and she didn't order a Static IP. I'm definitely looking into AT&T Though, Sifting through proxy after proxy after proxy just to find out if they do work they're all banned is getting old.

For only $40/monthly, I'm sure Torrents can make a hell of a lot more than $40/monthly
